Samardzic Named American Athletic Conference Swimmer Of The Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/The American) – Junior Matea Samardzic was honored as the American Athletic Conference's first women's Swimmer of the Week for the 2016-17 season after a fast weekend of racing at the SMU Classic. This is the first such honor for Samardzic, who is in her first season with the Mustangs. She was also named The American Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming News.

The Split, Croatia, native was named the High-Point Swimmer at the Classic, an event which produced the top times in the nation in every event swam but two. The 2016 Olympian and backstroke specialist, joined the group of pace setters with the nation's fastest time in the 200-yard backstroke coming in at 1:53.69 for the victory and meet record.

She also holds the third fastest times in Division I in the 100-yard backstroke (52.92), 200-yard individual medley (1:59.43) and 400-yard individual medley (4:12.52). All four of her individual times from the weekend were NCAA B standards.

In relay action, Samardzic led off both the 200- and 400-yard medley relays. The Mustangs are currently fourth in the nation in the 400 (3:37.87) and fifth in the 200 (1:40.37).

The SMU Classic featured 2016 NCAA Championship top 10 teams USC (6th), Louisville (8th) and Michigan (10th) as well as UCLA (17th) and Miami (T-40th).
