Men's soccer battles Connecticut to 1-1 draw

Mustangs, Huskies Battle To 1-1 Draw

STORRS, Conn. (SMU)— The SMU men's soccer team played UConn to a 1-1 draw in Storrs, Connecticut Saturday night. The tie held the Mustangs to 6-9-1 (2-4-1 American) on the season, while Connecticut now sits at 11-6-1 (3-4-1 American).
Connecticut went up early in the 23rd minute of the match after Simen Olafsen headed a shot into the box.
It was not until the 57th minute when freshman forward Garrett McLaughlin found the equalizer, off an Eddie Munjoma cross, to tie the score 1-1. It was McLaughlin's fourth goal and Munjoma's fourth assist of the season.
Neither team could connect for a goal in the remaining minutes, causing the Mustangs to play in their second consecutive double overtime match. Through two overtime periods the Mustangs got off nine total shots while UConn attempted 17.
Junior midfielder Mauro Cichero led SMU in shots with four, while Stanton Garcia, Bryce Clark, A.J. Jeffries, Munjoma and McLaughlin each registered one a piece.
In the net for the Mustangs, junior goalkeeper Michael Nelson recorded five saves of the six shots on goal he faced.
