SMU and the World Cup

After talking to someone close to the college and international soccer scene, I hear there's a good chance that as many as three Mustangs have a chance to make the U.S. National Team in time for the 2006 World Cup. I was told that Daniel Hernandez, who plays with the NY/NJ Metrostars, was about to join the National Team last year when he blew out his knee. In addition, goalkeeper Tom Presthus is considered to be among the National Team's candidates to replace Kasey Keller and/or Brad Friedel when they eventually retire, and Carl Bussey is thought to be a National Team-caliber defender.

Hope to see three Ponies playing for the U.S. in the next World Cup!

Tom Presthus should have been on this year's team. Not that he's better than Friedel, who was amazing, or even Keller. But the third keeper was Tony Meola, and he wasn't that good even before he got old and fat. He's always been slow.

Hats off to the Americans for a great run in this year's World Cup. Hopefully Presthus, Bussey and Hernandez can help push the US even further in 2006!
