McLaughlin Selected 8th Overall To Houston Dynamo In MLS Super Draft
DALLAS (SMU) - Garrett McLaughlin was selected No. 8 overall by the Houston Dynamo in Thursday's 2020 MLS Super Draft. McLaughlin becomes the eighth Mustang ever to be taken in the 1st round, and fourth Mustang in the last three years.
McLaughlin concluded his career on the Hilltop as one of the most decorated players to ever wear the red and blue. He scored 36 goals in his time at SMU and was a two-time All Region player, and an All-American in 2017. A Senior CLASS Award finalist, McLaughlin helped lead the Mustangs to an Elite Eight run in the NCAA tournament, and was part of an offense that scored the second most goals in the country.
A proven winner, McLaughlin helped SMU win three consecutive American Athletic Conference championships, winning the regular season crown twice and the postseason crown from 2017-2019.
The Oklahoma City native heads to Houston and will be coached by hall of famer Tab Ramos, who enters his first season at the helm of the Dynamo.
"A very dynamic forward. We think for us he can play any of the three positions up top," Ramos said of his first pick as manager of the Dynamo, during the live stream of the MLS SuperDraft on ESPN+. "He presses well and that is something that we really liked."
McLaughlin also joins former SMU teammate Michael Nelson, who was selected in the 1st round of the 2018 MLS Super Draft by Houston.
