SMU Takes Down Temple To Begin Conference Play 2-0
DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – SMU took down Temple in four sets (23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19) to begin 2-0 in American Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs were led by Rachel Woulfe who finished with 16 kills and tied her personal-best with seven block assists. SMU (6-6, 2-0 AAC) dropped a tightly contested first set, but rallied to take the next three sets in front of its home crowd. Jadyn Bauss grabbed her third double-double on the season with 11 kills and 11 digs to lift the Mustangs over the Owls.
After dropping the first set by a minimal margin, SMU came out fired up in the second set jumping out to a 12-6 advantage. The Mustangs never let up pushing their lead all the way up to 19-11. Temple (4-8, 0-1 AAC) climbed back into the set 23-16 forcing a SMU timeout, but the Mustangs held tough and knotted the match up at one set a piece.
Temple led 15-13 in the third. Lily Heim and Hannah Jacobs then hit back-to-back kills to tie it up. Tied again at 22, neither team was willing to give in. Woulfe then took control of the set blasting three consecutive kills to give SMU a 2-1 match lead. In the fourth, SMU found an early lead and later went up 15-12 at the media timeout. The Owls took advantage of some timely errors to knot it up at 18. SMU went on a 6-0 scoring run with two big kills from Bauss to find match point and eventually take the conference victory.
Makayla Miller tied her personal-best with five assists along with a team-high 16 digs in the match. Heim dished out 43 more assists and finished with 14 digs on the evening.
Jacobs added 11 kills while Bria' Merchant notched 12 digs.
Miray Bolukbasi and Gem Grimshaw led Temple with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Falanika Danielson had a game-high 19 digs.
