SMU Rises To No. 1 In NCEA Rankings
WACO, Texas (NCEA/SMU) – For the first time in program history, SMU Equestrian checked in at No. 1 in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association team rankings, the selection committee announced Tuesday.
"We have to keep doing what we do day in and day out and not get ahead of ourselves," head coach Carol Gwin said. "It is a long season and we have just gotten started. It is a very talented team and I feel that we have the talent to go a long way this year if we stay focused."
SMU (1-0) was preseason No. 4. The Mustangs climbed two spots after taking down then top-ranked and defending national champion Oklahoma State 10-9 on Oct. 1.
The Mustangs swept the Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) in their first meet. Ellie Yeager's 86 earned her the Fences MOP and Taylor Madden was named the Flat MOP after her impressive outing. On the Western side, Mallory Vroegh was crowned the Horsemanship MOP and Taylor Zimmerman took home the Reining MOP.
The top-ranked Mustangs return to action on Nov. 4 when they host eighth-ranked Baylor at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
