No. 4 SMU Clinches American Athletic Conference Title In Head Coach Kevin Hudson’s 100th Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (SMU) — The No. 4 SMU Mustangs clinched at least a share of the American Athletic Conference title after defeating UAB 1-0 on the road. SMU's win also marked head coach Kevin Hudson's 100th career victory.

In the 48th minute, Kyran Chambron Pinho converted a free kick following UAB's Issah Hamidu being issued a yellow card just outside of the Blazers' goal box. Pinho sent the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, putting the Mustangs up 1-0.

Hudson now holds a head coaching record of 100-39-17 (.696). En route to the coveted 100th victory, Hudson has logged five NCAA Tournament appearances — including three sweet sixteens — four AAC regular-season championships and three AAC tournament titles.

"I speak for the staff, current and past, when I say it's a privilege to work alongside Huddy," associate head coach Ben Stoddard said. "It's special that we can celebrate his success the same night the team was able to win the regular season trophy. That said, both Huddy and this team have a lot more we want to achieve."

Sophomore Alexander Petraeus recorded the most shots taken of the match, with four — two of which were on target. Senior Harvey Castro followed with three.

SMU sits with 19 points in the conference standings. The Mustangs boast a 11-1-2 overall record, including a conference record of 5-0-1.

The win marked senior goalkeeper Cole Johnson's seventh shutout of the season. The four-time AAC Goalkeeper of the Week recorded one save.

SMU returns to play at home next week after two straight road matches.

The Mustangs will be honoring their six seniors on Wednesday for Senior Night, when SMU takes on Temple in its final game of the regular season. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Washburne Stadium, with the senior ceremony taking place at 6:45 p.m.

Definitely — Hudson compared it to the football team moving in to the SEC.
