SMU Ties No. 9 Denver On Sunday Night Clash
DALLAS (SMU) — SMU Men's Soccer held No. 9 Denver to a 2-2 tie at Washburne Stadium, Sunday. The Mustangs are now 2-0-2 after the first two weeks of the season.
Milton Lopez scored his second career goal for the Mustangs, while Bailey Sparks scored his second goal. Sparks' goal was the second penalty kick goal of his SMU career. Jaylinn Mitchell created the Mustangs' opening goal, recording his first and second assist for the season for SMU.
The Mustangs are now 1-0-1 against ranked opponents this season. They won 1-0 against Saint Louis on Thursday.
How It Happened
The Mustangs and Pioneers were even for the first 15 minutes of the match before Mitchell took the initiative with an individual run through the right wing leading to a cross to set up Lopez left-foot volley, giving the Mustangs an early lead.
The goal was Lopez's second goal of the season and second career goal for the Mustangs.
Chris Deamon was fouled inside the penalty area to give the Mustangs a chance to extend the lead. Sparks converted the penalty kick to double the lead for the Mustangs in the 26th minute.
The goal was Sparks' second career penalty kick goal for SMU. He is two for two from the penalty spot.
Denver reduced the lead with a set-piece goal from the left corner. Mustangs lead 2-1 at the half-time break.
The second half resumed with both teams getting equal chances. The scoreline remained 2-1 throughout the first 25 minutes of the second half before the Pioneers equalized in the 70th minute.

SMU is now 5-2-2 against Denver (2-1-2 in Dallas). The all-time scoreline between the Mustangs and Pioneers is 19-10.
