SMU Volleyball Ranked For The First Time In Program History
Story LinksDALLAS (SMU) – The Mustangs are ranked No. 22 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), released on Monday. It's the first time SMU volleyball has been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 poll in its 29-year history.
The Mustangs are off to a 6-3 start in their inaugural ACC season, which included two ranked wins over No. 2 Nebraska at home and No. 18 Baylor in Waco. Along with the Baylor win, SMU defeated Houston 3-1 to end the week.
SMU's sweep over the Huskers marked the highest-ranked win in program history, beating the previous high set last season in the Mustangs' five-set win over then No. 14 Baylor on Sept. 14. The Mustangs hosted the Huskers in front of a record-breaking 6,773 fans in Moody Coliseum.
A week later, SMU swept No. 18 Baylor for their second-ranked win of the season. The win marked just the second time the Mustangs had ever defeated the Bears in Waco. SMU's other wins have come against (RV) San Diego, Milwaukee, Weber State, and Houston, two of which are receiving votes in the latest poll, along with Hawai'i who the Mustangs lost to in five in the season opener.
SMU Volleyball will take on Northern Iowa for the first of two matchups over the weekend with Panthers on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. CT in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Following the road trip to Iowa, SMU will start ACC play on the road against Georgia Tech on Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. CT.
