No. 2 SMU Falls To No. 1 TCU On Tiebreaker

BURLESON, Texas (SMU) – Second-ranked SMU equestrian fell in its season opener at No. 1 TCU after a 10-10 result led to a 1599.50-1548.75 raw score tiebreaker on Friday at Bear Creek Farms.

The back-and-forth affair saw the two programs split the events, with SMU claiming fences and horsemanship while TCU won reining and flat.

Elli Yeager picked up Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors on fences and flat, while Alexa Black claimed the horsemanship MOP honor.

On fences, Aedan Mooney tallied the Mustangs' first point of the meet with a 78-77 victory. Augusta Iwasaki followed it up with a commanding 93-55 decision to give SMU its first lead of the match. With fences tied 4-4, Yeager scored a 93 to gain the victory and give SMU a 3-2 advantage.

Maria Richards opened up reining with a 69.5-69 victory to extend SMU's lead. Following two consecutive Horned Frog points, Chalyce Head scored another narrow victory to earn a point for the Mustangs. TCU would answer in the last matchup to tie the meet at the break.

Katelyn VanDenburg claimed an 81-79 victory to give the Mustangs the lead on the flat, however TCU quickly regained three consecutive points. Yeager tallied a point for SMU to cut the TCU lead to one entering the final event.

In horsemanship, TCU won the first two points before Black gained a 77.5-75 victory to cut the home lead to two. Jayna Lagace subsequently gained a narrow 76.5-76 win, and Nya Kearns followed it up with a 74-72.5 victory to even the score at 10.

With the score knotted at 10, the tiebreaker was determined by total points scored, which TCU held an advantage with a 1599.50 mark over SMU's 1548.75.
