No. 4 Mustangs Fall To Top-Ranked Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. (SMU) – Fourth-ranked SMU Equestrian dropped a matchup on the road against No. 1 Auburn, 11-6, on Saturday at Auburn Equestrian Center.

Nya Kearns earned MOP accolades in horsemanship for the third straight meet and 25th time in her career.

SMU dropped to 1-3 following its season-opening, four-meet road trip, while Auburn improved to 3-0 after its homestand to open the year.

The first half of the meet featured flat and reining simultaneously, with Auburn taking victories in both events. On the flat, the Tigers claimed a 3-2 victory, while reining saw the final point be a draw resulting in a 3-1 result to give Auburn a 6-3 lead at the halfway point.

The Mustangs claimed the first two matchups of fences to open up the second half, however Auburn would earn the final three to take the event. In horsemanship the two teams drew two of the matchups, and the Tigers would win two to clinch the victory.

On the flat, the Tigers and Mustangs exchanged points, however the home team was able to get the edge 3-2. Augusta Iwasaki recorded an 84.5 and Aedan Mooney saw a score of 85 to claim the two victories for SMU in the event.

Reining saw Auburn and SMU split the first two matchups before the Tigers were able to win the subsequent two to claim the event. Sara Filiatreau earned the lone Mustangs win with a score of 71.75, while Chalyce Head recorded a 71.25 to push the final point of the event.

In the first event of the second half, the Mustangs' Hannah Hoch and Augusta Iwasaki scored a 79.5 and 88.5, respectively, to open up fences with two SMU wins. However, the Tigers would rally with three consecutive points to take the event 3-2.

After drawing the opening matchup, the Tigers gained two points in horsemanship to clinch their victory. Kearns recorded a 75.5 to earn her fourth win of the season in the event in as many tries, and Alexa Black would score a 73.75 to push the final point of the meet.

The Mustangs return home to the Dallas Equestrian Center for the first time this season to face off against No. 3 TCU on Friday, October 25, at 10 AM.
