Seniors Shine On Senior Night, No. 21 SMU Wins Against Wake Forest
DALLAS (SMU) — No. 21 SMU Men's Soccer won 3-0 over Wake Forest on Senior Night at Washburne Stadium, Friday.
Bailey Sparks, Enzo Panozzo and Kyran Chambron Pinho scored in the shutout win. Nikola Djordjevic made his fifth assist of the season on Panozzo's goal and drew the penalty kick on Sparks' goal.
Martin Dominguez saved a penalty kick in the 74th minute and earned his fourth career clean sheet.
The Mustangs are now 3-2-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play heading into their final regular season match at Louisville on Nov. 1.
How It Happened
The Mustangs took charge of the match and made multiple goal-scoring chances as soon as the ball was kicked off.
Sparks opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 20th minute of the first half. Djordjevic earned the penalty with brilliant individual skill to fend off three defenders.
The goal was Sparks' fifth goal from the penalty spot from five attempts this season.
SMU remained in control through the first half to keep the 1-0 lead at the break.
Both teams saw sporadic chances at the start of the second half until the 74th minute when Wake Forest earned a penalty kick.
The Demon Deacons' Julian Kennedy shot the penalty kick to the bottom right corner, but Martin Dominguez made a brilliant save to retain the Mustangs' lead.
The save was Dominguez's first penalty kick save in his SMU career.
Following the penalty kick save, SMU slowly regained control of the match and Panozzo doubled the lead with his first SMU goal in the 83rd minute.
Djordjevic assisted the goal with a cross from the right wing that bounced off a Wake Forest defender. Chambron Pinho set up the bounced cross and Panozzo was there with a strong left-footed shot to double the lead.
It did not take long for the Mustangs to find their third goal. Chambron Pinho curls the ball from a free kick by the touchline and rattles the left corner net of the goal.
The Mustangs won the match 3-0 at full-time.
Other Notes
SMU continues its scoring streak to make it 35 consecutive matches with one or more goals.
Sparks have five penalty kick goals from five attempts this season. He leads SMU with six goals and six assists this season.
Dominguez made SMU's first penalty save of the season. He made four saves to record his fourth career shutout.
Panozzo scored his first SMU goal.
Chambron Pinho has four goals from a set-piece this season. He has three goals from a direct free kick and a goal from a corner.
The Mustangs are fifth in the ACC standings with 11 points, results through Oct. 25.
