No. 20 SMU Wins Regular Season Finale At Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (SMU) — No. 20 SMU Men's Soccer won 3-2 at Louisville in its regular season finale, Friday.
Nikola Djordjevic scored his first goal of the season to win the five-goal thriller. Brock Pope netted his first SMU goal while Milton Lopez scored his fourth of the season.
Kyran Chambron Pinho made his fourth assist of the season to serve Pope's first goal for SMU.
With the win, SMU has clinched the right to host their first-round Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament match on Nov. 6.
How It Happened
The Mustangs were in control of the match as soon as the ball was kicked off and they scored the opening goal in the 12th minute of the match.
Pope found the back of the net with a header from Chambron Pinho's cross from a corner kick.
SMU kept control of the match through the first half, and it was Lopez who doubled the lead for the Mustangs in the 42nd minute.
A Louisville defender cleared a cross from Stephan Soghomonian, but the ball fell to Lopez who hit a left-footed one-timer to score the goal.
The Mustangs ended the first half with a 2-0 lead.
The second half started, and the hosts cut down the lead in the 51st minute with a goal by Bilal Camara. They followed it up with another goal in the 65th minute to square the game.
But the scoreline did not stay even for long.
Djordjevic showed brilliant individual skills by dribbling from the right wing and into the penalty box. He maneuvered through multiple defenders and finished with a strong left-footed shot to win the match.
SMU held on to the lead to clinch the 3-2 win.
Other Notes
SMU continued its scoring streak to make 36 consecutive matches with one or more goals.
Chambron Pinho has six goal contributions from a set-piece this season. He has two assists and four goals from a set-piece.
The Mustangs now lead the series 2-1 against Louisville.
SMU will finish within the top five of the ACC regular season standings with 14 points and a 4-2-2 conference record.
