No. 5 SMU Downs No. 9 Baylor, 15-3, Behind Complete Performance
DALLAS (SMU) – Fifth-ranked SMU Equestrian won every event en route to a resounding, 15-3, victory over No. 9 Baylor on Saturday at Dallas Equestrian Center.
The Mustangs did not surrender a single point on the Western side, picking up a 4-0 win in Horsemanship and a 5-0 victory in Reining.
With the win, SMU improves to 3-3 on the season, including a 2-0 record at home. Baylor falls to 1-3, with all three losses coming on the road. The Mustangs have now won eight straight meets against Baylor dating back to the 2017-18 season.
Augusta Iwasaki picked up MOP honors for the Mustangs in Fences, her first of the season, as she improved to 6-0 on the year in the event. The accolade moved the junior to tied for second all time for Fences MOPs in SMU history.
Nya Kearns and Addi Schmersal added MOPs on the Western side in Horsemanship and Reining, respectively. Kearns picked up her fourth MOP of the year, while Schmersal earned the accolade for the second straight meet.
In the first half, SMU picked up wins in both Fences (3-2) and Horsemanship (4-0). This marked the third time in the last four meets the Mustangs have not surrendered a point in Horsemanship after going 5-0 against No. 6 Georgia and No. 2 TCU.
SMU picked right back up on the Flat to kickoff the second half, winning the event 3-1 to clinch the meet entering the final event of the afternoon. In reining the Mustangs swept the Bears to complete an unblemished record on the Western side for the meet.
The Mustangs opened the meet strong, picking up three of the first four fences points to take the event 3-2. Iwasaki, Elli Yeager and Hannah Hoch all recorded victories for the Mustangs.
On the western side in the first, SMU's Ava Blyth, Kearns, Jayna Lagace and Alexa Black all recorded wins to continue a dominating stretch in Horsemanship this season. Already the SMU record holder for Horsemanship wins in her career (52), Kearns' victory improved her mark to an unblemished 6-0 on the season.
SMU continued its success early in the second half, with Iwasaki, Aedan Mooney and Elli Yeager picking up wins for the Mustangs as they took Flat 3-1. Yeager's win put away the meet for SMU as it extended the lead to 10-3.
The Mustangs earned a sweep of the Western events after boasting five victories in Reining to close the meet. Schmersal, Chalyce Head, Maria Richards, Sara Filiatreau and Shelby Clausen earned wins in the event.
SMU wraps up its fall slate on Friday, November 15, on the road against No. 4 Oklahoma State in Stillwater. The action is set to begin at 1 p.m. Pedigo-Hull Equestrian Center.
