DALLAS (SMU) — No. 12 Seed SMU Men's Soccer advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Championship with a 2-1 win over Washington at Washburne Stadium, Sunday. Owen Zarnick provided the Mustangs with a late winner.
In a thrilling back-and-forth, the Mustangs were able to edge a 2-1 win over the Huskies with an 89th-minute goal by Zarnick.
Stephan Soghomonian scored his second career goal for the Mustangs, while Zarnick scored his third goal of the season to win the match.
Bailey Sparks contributed to his 15th goal of the season with an assist to Soghomonian's equalizer. Lamar Bynum assisted the match-winner and now has two assists this season.
How It Happened
SMU held more possession of the ball at the start of the match, creating three shooting opportunities in the first 20 minutes.
While both teams were still grappling to seize momentum, the Huskies took their chance on a counterattack as Joe Dale scored a goal in the 30th minute.
The Mustangs gradually gained momentum and found an equalizer from Soghomonian in the 40th minute. Sparks' through ball passed three defenders to find Soghomonian, and the freshman rattled the goal net from outside the penalty box.
The first half ended with a 1-1 scoreline.
The second half started with sporadic offensive chances between the two sides. The Huskies had a slight edge through the second half by outshooting SMU 10 to six.
The scoreline remained 1-1 as the match entered its final minutes, but the Mustangs' offense earned a corner kick in the 89th minute.
Sparks' long corner bounced around inside the six-yard box. Bynum took a shot off a loose ball, but it was blocked from close range, and Zarnick slotted the rebound to win the match for the Mustangs.
The scoreline was 2-1 for SMU at full-time and the Mustangs advance to the NCAA Championship round of 16.

SMU continues its scoring streak to make it 39 consecutive matches with one or more goals.
Zarnick scored his first career match-winner for SMU.
Soghomonian scored two goals for the Mustangs this season as a freshman.
SMU advanced to the NCAA round of 16 for its second consecutive season. It will be the Mustangs' fifth Sweet 16 appearance under Kevin Hudson.
The Mustangs will make their 26th NCAA Third Round appearance.
