Three Mustangs selected in Pro Volleyball Federation Draft
DALLAS (SMU) – Three SMU Volleyball players have been drafted in the 2024 Pro Volleyball Federation Draft, announced by the Federation on Monday. SMU volleyball is one of four programs with three selections in the draft, joining Nebraska, Penn State, and Wisconsin.
Opposite hitter Naya Shime, middle blocker Natalie Foster, and outside hitter Maya Tabron were selected in the draft, joining Emma Clothier, who was drafted by the Federation last season in the league's inaugural draft.
Naya Shime was the first Mustang off the board, picked by the Grand Rapids Rise as the No. 13 overall pick (Round 2, Pick 5). Shime leads the Mustangs this season in kills per set, averaging 3.30, and points per set at 3.97 in the program's first year in the ACC. The Casper, Wyoming native was one of 52 players in the nation on the AVCA Division I Player of the Year Watch list earlier this season. Shime was also a key part of the championship season in the American a year ago.
Natalie Foster was the second Mustangs selected in this year's draft, picked right after Shime by the Orlando Valkyries at No.14 (Round 2, Pick 6). Foster leads the ACC and is seventh in the nation in aces this season, with a program record of 63. The middle also is one of the most efficient hitters at her position in the nation, ranking third in the ACC and 39th country in hitting percentage, swinging at a .379 percent clip in her lone season in Dallas. Prior to this season, Foster was a standout an all-conference performer at Wichita State.
Maya Tabron was the final SMU player selected in the 2024 draft, going to the San Diego Mojo at No. 23 overall (Round 3, Pick 7). In her lone season with the Mustangs, Tabron has collected 313 kills and 260 blocks, second and first on the team, respectively. Prior to SMU, Tabron logged over 1,000 kills at Colorado and was also an all-conference performer in the Big-12.
The Mustangs are 23-6 overall, 15-3 in the ACC, and have been ranked No. 10 in the country, the highest ranking in program history, for the fourth straight week. SMU rides an eight-game winning streak into the final two matches of the regular season before postseason play begins Dec. 5-7.
