Chen Earns 100th Career Win, SMU Sweeps Home Opener Doubleheader

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis swept its home opener doubleheader against Prairie View A&M on Thursday.

The Mustangs won the first match 6-1 and the second match 4-0 to take their second and third wins of the season.

Head coach Grant Chen earned his 100th career win in the first match of the day.

SMU improved to 3-0 at the start of the spring following their road win at Hawaii on Monday.

Georgi Georgiev and Hughes Peus won all their matches without dropping a game. Georgiev, who joined the Mustangs this spring, won 6-0 in all five sets played.

"I did not believe I could win three matches in a row with 6-0s," said Georgiev. "It was a little tough adapting to the time change and environment when I first moved here but I've gotten used to it and started feeling good with my game."

How it Went
The Mustangs dominated the first match by grabbing the doubles point as Jerry Barton and Maks Silagy's pair opened the day with a 6-1 win. Ofek Shimanov and Xavier Calvelo took their first win as a doubles pair (6-2) to clinch the doubles point.

In singles, Georgiev took the Mustang's second point of the day with a win over Ashton Bunch (6-0, 6-0).

Xavier Calvelo followed it with a win over Xavier Peter-Gooding (6-1, 6-1) and Louis Cloud took a 6-0, 6-2 win to clinch the match.

In the second match, the Mustangs also clinched the doubles point with wins by the Georgiev/Vikas Deo pair (6-0) and the Noah McDonald/Hughes Peus pair (6-0).

Peus and Georgiev resumed their perfect form with another 6-0, 6-0 win in the singles matches to take the first three points for the Mustangs. McDonald clinched the second match with his victory over Bunch (6-1, 6-0).

"This match means a lot, it got us excited for the future playing tougher opponents in in the ACC," said Calvelo. "There is more energy playing with the team compared to the fall where it's more individual. A lot more pressure as well, but that is a reason for us to improve."
