Mustangs defeat Abilene Christian in spring season opener

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Women's tennis team won their opening match of the spring season, cruising to a 7-0 victory over Abilene Christian on Sunday at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.

"Really proud of our effort across the board. We had a great weekend of practice, and it showed in some big moments today," said Head Coach Jeff Nevolo. "Very excited for June, Ellie, Sophie, and Ari to get their first dual match wins as Mustangs."

SMU (1-0, 0-0 ACC) captured the double point by earning victories on courts two and three against ACU (0-1, 0-0 WAC). Veterans Drew Morris and Arianna Stavropoulos downed the Wildcat's pair Maria Cascos and Jess Board in a 6-1 triumph. Newcomers to the Hilltop, Sophie Llewellyn and Ellie Pittman added another 6-1 win over Eva Arranz and Angela Del Campo. Caroline McGinley and June Bjork held a 5-3 advantage on court one over Olivia Sears and Masha Vrsalovic, before the matchup was deemed unfinished.

After nailing down the doubles point, SMU swept singles play going a dominant 6-0. Bjork claimed the first dual win, 6-1, 6-0, followed by Morris who took down Olivia Sears of ACU, 6-4, 6-1. Pittman secured the 1-0 start for the Mustangs with a 6-2, 6-2 win in her debut on the Hilltop.

On court three, Stavropoulos also secured her first dual win as a Mustangs, defeating Angela Del Campo, 6-2, 6-4. On court six, Skelton earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory to start the season, followed by Llewellyn who capped off SMU's perfect day with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

NEXT UP:
The Mustangs will hit the road to face No. 21 Vanderbilt at the Lummis Family Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn. on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. CT.
