Mustangs drop road opener at No. 21 Vanderbilt
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team dropped its road opener 5-2 to No. 21 Vanderbilt on Sunday.
Wins on court two and three gave SMU the early advantage as senior Drew Morris and Arianna graduate student Stavropoulos won their second doubles matchup of the season, defeating Sonya Macavel and Trinetra Vijayakumar 6-2. Shortly after, Senior Ellie Pittman and freshman Sophie Llewellyn clinched the doubles point for SMU with a 6-3 victory over Bridget Stammel Stammel and Valeria Ray, also improving to 2-0 as a pairing in the spring season.
After landing the doubles point, Vandy regained momentum, only dropping one singles, capturing wins in the first five matchups to seal the match result. Millie Skelton secured the lone singles point for the Mustangs, taking down Webster 6-2, 2-6, 10-8. Skelton improved to a 2-0 singles record in the spring season.
NEXT UP:
SMU returns to play Saturday, Jan. 25, at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Mustangs (1-1) are set to face Arkansas (0-0) in their first match of the event.
