Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggJoe Willy's was awesome. Ben's was always a blast, too. Both college hangout staples. These kids today with their king fu bars and upscale dives, blech.
Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggYep! The only true dive bar in uptown is now gone - the Loon. Unfortunately, the Dallas mindset with buildings, restaurants, bars and stores is new is always better. I hate that!
Does anyone remember the Chinese buffet at Greenville/Lovers where Central Market is now? I loved that place. It probably wasn't really as good as I remember but it was great for a poor college student back then. It was surrounded by a couple of strip clubs and bars when that area had soul. Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggI can't believe they blew up the Loon to put in a CVS right near a Walgreens (maybe the other way around). Always loved the Loon. Heard the new digs aren't as great; the drinks still are, just doesn't have that dumpy charm.
Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggThe rent is too damn high!
Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-Trigg
It's sad. I live a block away. It would be a little easier to stomach if it was for something great for the neighborhood. Instead, we get a suburban CVS that no one goes to. Such a waste of a prime piece of land. As for the new Loon. It's nowhere near the old vibe. I can tell a lot of the old regulars are showing up but it will have trouble surviving, IMO. Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggThe vibe at the new Loon is really off compared to the old place, but that's to be expected. Drinks are still good, though.

Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggOur three most popular options for lunch were:
1. Radford Cafeteria on Hillcrest (aka the Dollar Gobble). All you could eat for 99 cents. Plus, Miss Inez on the organ, so we would get her to play Varsity so everyone would have to stop eating and stand up! 2. Ralph and Peggy's Beef Bar in Snyder Plaza. Better after Ralph departed. Ah, those 10 cent coconut fried pies! 3. Charcoal Broiler Steak House in Snyder Plaza. Always a tough choice between the sirloin for $1.18 or the other cut (ribeye maybe?) for $1.22. That price included a salad, baked potato and toast.
Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggWhere in Snider Plaza was the Charcoal Broiler?
Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggThe one I remember was in Preston Center-unless there were 2 in HP-I know it was a franchise and there are still some open today- I think its Sherry Lane on the next street to the South of the Woolworth's and main square -it was fabulous, quick and easy with a Cafeteria type line to order. In 30 minutes you order and eat a charco-broiled steak, salad and baked potatoes for nothing. I think it was like 6 bucks when I was in school-I think-been a long time

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggThe steak house was near the fountain on the west side as I recall.
Re: Campisi's to Open at Hughes-TriggThere was a Mr Ghatti's at Airline and Mockingbird.
Campisis is an institution in Dallas, plenty of other pizza options but nice to have on campus. Olivellas is still pretty good close to campus.
