Interesting topic of discussion in my english class today...

Postby smu diamond m » Mon Nov 13, 2006 11:49 pm

My professor asked about how everyone felt about the whole playboy thing and how they thought it represented the university.

Responses varied from:
"If I knew SMU let people do that, it would deter me from applying and/or accepting."
to
"Who cares? It's art."

The puritan in the corner (the first quote came from her) proclaimed how it reflected the degradation of moral fiber at SMU and how SMU isn't concerned with it. Funny, I thought. So I decided to tell her about our favorite bunny, Erin Bann, and how she didn't know about Bann even thought the same thing happened 25 years ago.

Just fyi.

I hate to be the "puritan" on the board, but I have to say I agree somewhat w/ the gist of the girl in your class. I don't think "if I had known, it would have discouraged me from coming here" is an apt statement, but I do think I have a problem w/ Playboy and SMU.

I realize that SMU is dedicated to an open education process, but I think on some level if we are going to have the word "Methodist" in our name, then there are some things the university should take a stand on. Sure, the seminary may be the only christian education courses on campus, and sure we are not interested in becoming Baylor or other more conservative schools, but I think taking a stand on a moral issue such as this is completely appropriate.

SMU may not have to push christianity on its students, but it can at least emphasize Methodist values. In my opinion, the school should at least "strongly discourage' students being associated w/ these types of activities - otherwise we should just drop Methodist from our name.
