Wife of Former SMU President Zumberge Dead at 83

The wife of Grand Valley State University's first president has died of cancer at the age of 83.

A memorial service for Marilyn Edwards Zumberge, wife of James H. Zumberge, is set for June 20 in California at San Marino Community Church. She died June 8 at her home in Pasadena.

She was born in Oak Park, Ill., graduated from Lawrence University, and in 1947 married James Zumberge. He was president when GVSU was chartered, until 1969. Zumberge Library and Zumberge Pond are named for him on the Allendale campus.

He went on to become president of Southern Methodist University and then led University of Southern California for a decade until he retired shortly before his death in 1992 at age 68. He was also a renowned geologist and two Antarctic sites, Cape Zumberge and the Zumberge Coast, bear his name.

The couple are survived by four children and eight grandchildren.
