Play: Yerma by Federico Garcia Lorca
What: A drama of obsession, passion, jealousy and friendship from the pen of the
magisterial Spanish poet, dramatist and theatre director whose work was banned
by Franco’s regime until 1953. Written in 1934, Yerma (“barren” in Spanish) is
the Andalucian story of a woman whose desire for a child drives her to the murder
that murders hope. Directed by guest artist Patricia McGregor.

Meadows Chorale and Meadows Concert Choir: “Matters of the Heart”
What: The final choral concert of the season explores love in all of its facets – flirtation,
longing, despair, hope and fulfillment. Featured on the program will be Eric
Whitacre’s lyrical “Five Hebrew Love Songs” and Johannes Brahms’
“Liebeslieder Walzer, Op. 52.” The choirs welcome as special guests the A
Cappella Choir of J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas, conducted by
Michael Lysinger and Laura Taylor.

Meadows Museum Art Activity: “Drawing from the Masters”
What: Artist Ian O’Brien leads afternoons of informal drawing instruction based on
works in the Meadows Museum’s permanent collection. Each session will
provide an opportunity to explore a variety of techniques and improve drawing
skills. Designed for adults and students ages 15 and older, and open to all
levels of experience. Drawing materials will be available, but participants are
encouraged to bring their own sketchpads and pencils. Attendance is limited
to 20 and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
When: May 1 & 22, 1:30-3 p.m.

Faculty Chamber Music Recital
What: Faculty member Liudmila Georgievskaya, who earned an Artist Certificate in
piano at the Meadows School last year and won first prize in the 2009 Liszt-
Garrison International Piano Competition, will present a chamber music recital
with recent alumni Francesco Mastromatteo (cello) and Brent Buemi (clarinet)
and student Tatiana Glava (violin). The group will perform Olivier Messiaen’s
Quartet for the End of Time.

Hawn Gallery Exhibit: “Hidden Treasures of the Mary McCord/Edyth Renshaw Collection
on the Performing Arts”

What: One of the initial events in SMU’s celebration of its Centennial, this exhibition
draws from an extensive collection, housed in the Jerry Bywaters Special
Collections Wing of the Hamon Arts Library, that includes significant holdings in
the history of theatre, film, music and dance. The exhibition documents selected
activities of the Arden Club, SMU’s only theater group from 1916 through the
1960s, beginning with its initial production held in conjunction with SMU’s first
commencement exercises. It also includes photographs of a number of
now-destroyed Dallas performance venues, such as several downtown movie
houses and Fair Park’s Cycle Park Theatre, as well as a number of items
documenting performances of the Little Theatre of Dallas (1921-43). The Dallas
State Fair and Exposition of 1886, predecessor of the State Fair of Texas, and
the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition are represented as well. The exhibition also
features national and international items, such as programs from New York
vaudeville performances and the Weimar Opera House in Germany, Tin Pan
Alley sheet music by Irving Berlin, envelopes used to present the 1951 Academy
Awards and more.

Meadows Museum Exhibit: “Concrete Improvisations: Collages and Sculpture by
Esteban Vicente”

What: This exhibition will explore the role of Spanish-born American painter
Esteban Vicente. A member of the first generation of New York Abstract
Expressionists, Vicente was a significant 20th-century artist and teacher who
combined elegant color harmonies with a mixture of Cubism, Constructivism and
assemblage. Vicente taught at New York University, University of California-
Berkeley, Black Mountain College and Yale University. The focused exhibition
will feature 81 of the artist’s works, including collages and polychrome sculptures,
and will also explore the influence he exerted on colleagues and students
throughout his career.

Meadows Museum Exhibit: “Esteban Vicente in America: Collage, Color, and Somewhere in Between”
What: This exhibition aims to provide a context for understanding the work of
Esteban Vicente after his arrival in New York from Spain in 1936. It will
underscore the importance of this academically trained, first-generation
Abstract Expressionist, well-versed in art history, who had close associations
with many artists of the New York School. Esteban Vicente in America: Collage,
Color, and Somewhere in Between will be a focused exhibition that will weave
some of Vicente’s artistic precursors together with works by his contemporaries,
with whom he shared a clear artistic affinity, including Willem de Kooning,
Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko.

Meadows Museum Family Day
What: Adults and children of all ages are invited to enjoy a variety of ongoing activities,
including collage and wood sculpture, as well as performances at 12:30 and 1:30
p.m. by the Dallas Puppet Theater. The program is held in conjunction with the
exhibition Concrete Improvisations: Collages and Sculpture by Esteban Vicente.

Guest Artist Piano Recital: William Cooper
What: Pianist William Cooper is a well-known accompanist who has performed with
numerous Metropolitan Opera singers, as well as in solo recitals and orchestra
concerts throughout the Southwest. Dr. Cooper retired from the Meadows School
faculty and now lives in Kentucky, where he continues to work as a performer,
accompanist and coach.

Museum Friday Gallery Talk: “Painting Space”
Who: Dr. Roberto Tejada, Distinguished Professor of Art History, SMU
What: At Black Mountain College, poet Charles Olson described the art of Esteban
Vicente as one of “painting space.” Dr. Tejada will look at works on display at
the Meadows Museum in light of Olson’s attraction to the “instant” and
“perpendicular” features of Vicente’s material treatment; a view to the uses, in art
and poetry, of collage technique, paper support, and language.

Museum Studio Art Program for Adults
What: Discover the exciting world of collage in this hands-on workshop, led by Dallas-
based artist Cecelia Feld. Participants will explore various approaches to this art
form, using a wide range of papers and other materials that can be glued to a
support. This program is offered in conjunction with the exhibition Concrete
Improvisations: Collages and Sculpture by Esteban Vicente. Space is limited,
and advance registration is required.
