Please help - medical school admissions.

Postby mustangxc » Tue Nov 05, 2013 3:53 pm

I am applying to medical school this year and among the schools I am applying to are the schools in Puerto Rico. They have a requirement for 12 hours of Spanish, which I have credit for on my transcript thanks to IB credits. However, they also have a requirement for 12 hours of English, and I only have the six hours of credit from freshmen rhetoric. One of the universities told me that if I had taken reading/writing intensive classes in the humanities, social sciences, etc. they would count that a s credit for the remaining six hours. However there is one university that wants me to prove it with course descriptions which I have done. Unfortunately, the only class that actually says reading/writing intenisve is one I took n philosophy, which ironically was the least reading and writing intensive cours I can think of. Nonetheless, I have reached out to SMU's pre-med advisors, but have not gotten a response. I graduated 10 years ago in December so I am no longer on campus or in the area. I am working full time at MD Anderson, so taking classes is not easy to do. Does anyone know of anyone in the administration that might be able to help? I am thinking that if an SMU official writes a letter stating that x courses were reading and writing intensive that would likely satisfy this university's requirement. Thank you very much for your help!

Try contacting whoever heads up Dedman College, or the dean of the departments you took the courses in question in.

I ended up contacting President Turner, who forwarded my request to the registrar's office. While I have many complaints about our athletic department, student life, etc. I have always been extremely appreciative of the education and treatment by the faculty and staff at SMU.
