Tragedy on the Hilltophttp://media.www.smudailycampus.com/med ... 2294.shtml
Another SMU student found dead in Perkins Hall. Sad tragedy, and again, it happened right before finals. Probably alcohol/drug related. Sad times. RIP. Not to be a [deleted], but again, this won't cause much of a stir since summer is right here and in less than a week the campus will be dead. Just like most people didn't take notice of the other kids death in December. Just really sucks.
Re: Tragedy on the Hilltop
What makes you say that? There's nothing in the story that suggests that. In fact, the story says: ".... The cause of Crist's death is currently unknown. The Dallas County Medical Examiner is conducting an investigation...." Whatever the cause, it's nothing short of tragic. Heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends.
I say that because they said no foul play, the odds of him having some medical accident are slim, it was during a time when you have no classes or anything to do really (how many kids actually study during reading days? not a lot), so I just assume it was drug/alcohol related.
Anyways, sucks for the SMU community.
I think this should help clear it up. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-070503smumay03,1,3628517.story?coll=chi-news-hed
He may have been drinking, but he also had diabetes. I feel he threw off his blood sugar and no one knew what to do to help him or that he was diabetic.
To be fair, the campus right now is pretty much dead. There are no bus parties, there are no big house parties, there's really no boozing going on much of anywhere. Almost everybody is in study mode during the dead days, with the exception of the few students that make a trip to their house during the evening. So no, actually the odds of him dying from alcohol or drugs are much lower than you'd think.
Until the coroner reports, let's leave the speculation at the door. This is a tragedy. A man died way too young. He will have to be buried by his parents which should never have to happen. People die for a myriad of reasons which are not drug related including heart attacks and strokes. I know a young woman who had a stroke at age 21 and nearly died from it and is still walking with a limp 11 years later. Diabetics are very prone to heart disease and strokes as well as diabetic coma's.
You must live in a hole on campus. There is plenty of drinking going on. Sir, shooting-star, sir.

No actually I live right in the middle of it so I would think that I know. Aside from several sorority formals which were going on during the last two day of classes, there has been almost no activity going on during the dead days. There has been very little drinking going on, especially for a dorm like boaz and those of us who are greek. This isn't Mary Hay or Virginia Snyder.
Second SMU student from Chicagoland and his untimley and unfortunate death:

So much for the Diabetes being the Cause of Death. Such a tragedy.

Hopefully, these deaths will send a bit of a signal to the student body that wreckless abuse of drugs and/or booze will get you dead. Unfortunately, many kids are showing up to college already dependent on booze and drugs. When that happens, more deaths occur.
hopefully this will send a signal to the admin... it's tough to be the harvard of the south or even the rice of DFW, when you have this kind of stuff taking place all in one semester... and i know this happens all across the nation, but what kind of message does this send to parents about the control (or lack thereof) when it comes to drug and alcohol abuse at smu? (kind of brings a whole new meaning to "high on the hilltop"). all of this is extremely unfortunate for the families and friends involved... it's about time SMU starts addressing some of these issues (before somebody bashes my comment, saying that SMU has no responsibility... smu could atleast have a mandatory drug and alcohol awarness class for incoming freshmen, i mean incoming first-years).
