They just need to get rid of the Greek Houses...at least for the frats

And before some of you freak out I'm not advocating to get rid of the Greek system.

You may think that the greeks have a huge problem but it was not that way back in the day.

There were a few guys that had stuff but the dorm was where the main seller lived. He might have even been a RA or whatever they call them.

Bring in the dogs and make it a surprise. Have each student sign a form when they apply for housing.

It's not that hard to at least discourage the behavior.

The Greek houses and the way they are set up at SMU help to make it all that more unique and beneficial to those who want to be a part of it. No system is perfect and no set up is flawless, but living in a house with your entire pledge class and the majority of your brothers is a much stronger and better experience than what many other schools have.

Anybody remember "Operation Stoned Pony" circa 1989 or so?
Nowadays, I guess sting operations are public.

Well said shock.

The lasting friends that I have from SMU are my KE brothers. My second group of friends are other athletes.

The KE house was somewhat self policed by the brothers. Nobody wanted to get in trouble or for the house to get in trouble. We also had NATIONAL that would come by and check on things.

How many of the people that died were in the Greek system? I'm not saying that there aren't drug-related issues in the Greek system, but I don't think that's the cause of it either.
I also don't think that having drug-sniffing dogs is going to do much either. It might do a little and there are going to be several arrests of people with pot. I'm not saying that it's a bad idea, but it's not going to get rid of the major source of the problem.
Is there a good solution? Drug tests at the beginning of each semester? Having people narc on their friends through an anonymous hotline? An undercover sting operation? The truth is that no matter what is done, you're not going to completely get rid of the problem.

Perhaps this is a radical idea, but maybe they should do....... nothing!

The school can't change culture - and drug issues are a function of culture, especially with the large sums of money some of these lucky rich kids have at their disposal.

All this happening at once makes things look worse than they are. True, any death is tragic, but if you took a 5 or 10 year average, I don't think SMU would come out looking too bad in deaths per capita.

Laws, rules, force, interference etc. isn't always the solution. Maybe SMU should ask parents NOT to send their kid to school with the huge amount of money it takes to support a coke habit.

A Ten Light-Bulb Idea!!!

Not to sound cynical, but fat chance. Too many indulgent parents.

I disagree, I think we should encourage parents to send enough money to support the habit, but the school needs to break into the business in order to fund the athletic department. Heck, we could even set it up so that the students would have to buy it at a game making them buy a ticket and come into the sporting venue in the process.
