Not as big a deal now, but many of us feel that if we did not raise such a stink and threaten to turn off the money spigit then they would have replaced Peruna, at least at football games.....June had every intention of having these horses replace Peruna on the field and lead the team at the beginning. It all changed, however, BECAUSE we made it into a big deal. Ms. PIckens and the university are now just trying to do damage control "ohh..ermmm...we were never going to replace Peruna..eh..mmm, yeah"
Well if many people FEEL it then it must be true.

Can anyone provide a link to any story in any publication in which someone representing SMU expressed a desire — either their own or on behalf of anyone else — to get rid of Peruna?
Neither can I.
Seems to me that the only people who have ever mentioned the removal/replacement of Peruna are fans.

One of the horse's trainers said something to effect of "he is going to be the new mascot" in an interview that someone posted, but I think that is the only reference I have seen and I do not think he meets your standard of representing SMU.

I still think the long term plan was to replace Peruna in Football, but you are right, there is no hard core proof of that. However, there is proof that June wanted these horses to lead the team onto the field, which is Peruna's job, so in essence they would replace Peruna in some aspects.....luckily the SMU community told Jones and the university to stick that idea back up their [deleted]...

In an interview, Maddie also said the horses may be the new mascots of SMU.
And in the game day interview she gave, she said JJ approached her about getting a mustang for SMU.

As it turned out this was much ado about nothing. But my question is why Jones skated for the most part on any criticism of his involvement in this fiasco in the first place.

Right — I think I saw both of those. But in each case, it sounded (read) like "the new" mascot could have meant "another" mascot. I don't recall anyone, anywhere, saying Peruna was going to go. I don't want to see Peruna go, either, but methinks this uproar has been fueled largely by those of us reacting to what we think the decisions were, rather than those who made any decisions.

Here you go: Boone and Madeleine are presenting SMU with a trained mustang, which pleases head coach June Jones. "My team wants to come out behind a mustang," he said. http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:AIb ... clnk&gl=usOrsini said the mustangs' future involvement in game activities is "yet to be determined,"

In my eyes, he hasn't totally skated but I put the least blame on him...He wanted a big horse, he brought one to Ford last year to see how it did on the astro turf...Turner told him No Way... This year, he still wanted a big horse, so he did an end around with Staubach and Pickens...this is where Turner should have had some spine and said "I already told you No once, you pull this crap again and you can spend the rest of the week shoveling Peruna's [deleted] out on the farm".....Turner in his heart knew this was going to be a fiaso, but he didnt have the cajones to stand up to Jones since he was 2-0 in the conference...Turner thought maybe the SMU community would be happy as well and turn a blind eye. June did start it, but the adminstration let it get outta control...

This is the quote I was referencing as a fact that Peruna would be replaced, at least in some fashion, in football.

Oh hell no they can't produce a verifiable source or url showing any plan to replace Peruna....it's always "well I heard from so and so" or "well I just betcha" or "one of the coaches told a buddy"....or "everybody's lying"......blah blah blah.....BIG FAT ZERO!
Whats funny to watch is now they pat themselves on the back "for saving Peruna"....LOL....it's like if the weather is predicted as sunny....there are verifiable sources predicting it's going to be sunny....then the next day when it's sunny....they'd be like "SEE YEAH YEAH I SHOULD GET CREDIT FOR IT BEING SUNNY"

I repeat. If Peruna is "not going anywhere," then what are the big horseys for. Somebody please articulate that, so I don't have to
