In 10 years TCU will pass SMU in endowment, academic ranking, and national perception.

No offense but this is the one of the silliest comments I have seen on here, and that says a lot. Endowments have been relatively close for both for at least the last 5-10 years. But, we are too far ahead of them in academic ranking. No way they move up that much without us not moving up either. According to USnews, tcu is as far from us as we are from schools like USC, UCLA and Michigan. So, get some facts first because you're way off base on this one. Rankings are to a large degree based on national perception. Your argument is probably strictly related to football perception. It's two different points because the actual academic data doesn't support your opinion at all. They're 5 years ahead of us in football but we're far much further ahead of them academically.

There are some programs we have that are better than SC & UCLA & there are some where they are better. It's a crap-shoot more times than not.

Perception and reputation in academia tends to be very sticky. By this, I mean that it takes a long time to build and change academic reputations. It's very difficult to move up significantly in a short period of time. For instance, it will take a while for us to try to break the top 30. Similar, for tcu to try to move up to a level that is close to where we are right now. There are certain schools that have been regarded as top schools for almost a century. That won't change anytime soon. This isn't football rankings where a new poll is released every week. We do have positive momentum, and I believe we'll break top 50 shortly (I say this because we are on the cusp right now). SC and UCLA have stronger overall programs than we do, that is why they're ranked higher. Similar reasoning to us and tcu, we have stronger overall programs and have built up that reputation for a while now. That won't change anytime soon.

We need substantially fewer law schools, not more. Take a look at the number of people graduating with JDs vs. the number of legal jobs available right now. The fact that UNT is opening a law school is borderline criminal (no pun intended). But seriously, the diplomas from that law school won't be worth the paper they're printed on

Not really- they're huge money makers for a lot of schools. All you have to do is hire the teachers; there's almost zero overhead after that. Why do you think new ones are still popping up, despite the fact that the legal hiring market has been in the dumps for about three years?

Think about it- you can put 90 kids in a room paying anywhere from 0-$40,000 a year in tuition depending on scholarships, and pay one guy teaching the class what, $150k a year?

In general, but Texas is the exception. There are 20 law schools in California, 15 in New York, but only nine in Texas (and two, Texas Wesleyan and South Texas College of Law, are barely on the radar).

If South Texas is "barely on the radar," I assume that Texas Southern isn't even picked up by the radar.

Do not need more law schools, if anything they are currently operating in a bubble fueled by easy student loans and misinformation of how terrible the legal market really is for entering lawyers. Multiple class actions are already starting to take place against law schools. SMU's law school recently offered to pay law firms to temp SMU law school graduates. ABA has no qualms about adding as many law schools as possible, but sooner or later the market will correct. Graduating with 100K+ in undischargeable debt and no job prospects is not going to go one forever.

Also in the area UNT is already trying to add a law school, which will probably trap poor area students into massive debt and no future prospects. Good job UNT!

No, Texas doesn't need any more law schools either. There are grads from Texas, Baylor, and SMU that can't find jobs now.
