Yes, I think it started around the 2001-2002 timeframe. They taught people at Corral to 'lasso' at the end of singing Varsity, for how many years you were at SMU. Freshman=1 lasso, sophomore =2, etc. Didn't really bother me, but it just came out of nowhere and since it was only explained at Corral, everyone else was like "what the heck is this?"

I learned that at AARO in 96.

Wow ok, like I mentioned in my earlier post, I learned jack-squat at AARO. I always thought it came around after I was a freshman (2000) since I didn't learn it. But clearly it was around in 96.

I think it's an old tradition, but it probably just depends on who your leader is and how much of an eff they give.

I have never met a pre death penalty alumni who remembers it - must be Pye era. Should if be purged as heresy?

But even the old timers do the lasso I've noticed. Maybe they just want to look young and hip?

I am sure it has spread to everywhere now. Just saying asking some olds whether they did that in their era I have been told 'no'.

I've never done it but figured it was one of those things they make up every now and then. I guess I was right!

Of course, on the bright side, at least that means the student is at least somewhat paying attention to Varsity.
