SMU is priced according to its value. If it were not, it would not be competitive in the higher education marketplace, which it definitely is. Almost nobody pays full fare due to tuition dollars (given by generous alumni).

The golf center is being paid for by new donations, and will help our golf team climb into the top ten - They are already performing better than the swim team. We will get to the natatorium and the IPF - are 8 buildings under construction not enough for you? We are only going to be 5-7 million of the golf facility - its not edgin out anything i promise you. And if you think the new buildings underway, none of which you apparently had anything to do with, aren't going to help our university advance in stature nationally than you are clueless. Not sure what you rant about "facility members" is about. Our faculty have never been more highly acclaimed.

Give or don't give - but the whining makes you look like a junior college grad. SMU deserves your support. We are performing at a higher level as a University than we have in our history - due to those that have loyalty to SMU and know what it takes to be competitive. Throwing them 50 bucks won't hurt you a bit and it helps the university a ton.

Thank you for your post. I just remove SMU from my estate plan and have ceased all contributions. Now I can stop whining.

Hey, as a parent of a current SMU student, I think I have a say. When he first comitted to SMU, his scholarships covered maybe 85% of tuition, disregarding the huge fees. Now its down to closer to around 50%. He also has a scholarship with the band, but is lucky to keep it since they have been decimated under the AD's budget. Yep, that's one reason the band isn't going to more away football games. And you wonder why the band is small.

I'm an alum and I am appalled at how little support the school seems to provide to the students. Tuition has skyrocked but scholarships for existing students have not. Yes, we build huge stuff, but what about the students? Our increases are paying for the new dorms and builidings? Where has all of the money gone?

My biggest concern/complaint is that there is no apparent attempt to control, let alone cut costs. I know for a fact very little effort is exercised to bid goods and services. I would love to see SMU take the lead among private colleges in aggressively pursuing cost reductions and holding the line on tuition/fees/room and board prices - let alone reducing them. Turner really needs to create a powerful purchasing department.
Slapping a 5% increase on these prices each year is a sloppy way of conducting business and eventually is going to bite SMU in the [deleted] (no pun intended).......The cost-benefit matrix is seriously getting out of control.........

Interesting posts and attitudes. I graduated over 5 decades ago and many of the students at that time also felt they were being nickeled and dimed to death. How little things change.

Honestly, as long as it's easy to get student loans backed by the government, and all these politicians continue to do their damnedest to keep student loan interest rates low, then student loan funds will continue to pour out. Schools will continue to raise their tuitions by a ridiculous amount because they will get it! Simple economics.

Absolutely! Living it now.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
