TCU and UNT to open Med School

I'd be interested to know how much TCU is investing in this joint venture with UNT for a med school...I see to remember A&M buying Wesleyan for something around $40MM (that could be way off, though). EDIT: $73MM, I was way off.

Certainly the demand for legal jobs has decreased with the slowdown in the economy so short run that may have been a good move by TCU, but when all of the Obamacare regulations go into effect in 2017 I think you'll see a lot of smart kids coming out of undergrad questioning the practicality of spending four years in med school and accruing hundreds of thousands in student loans and then spending 2-3 years in residency (or whatever it is).

With so many cheaper and better alternatives around DFW I don't have a clue why anyone would want to go to UNT. UT-Dallas, UT-Arlington, University of Dallas, Collin College, etc. are all better institutions than UNT. Honestly A&M-Commerce is a better school.

Truth be told, many of the kids at UTA, NTSU and A&M Commerce would be better served by attending vocational schools.

And who would know better where UTA, NTSU and A&M Commerce students should go than someone who lives in Newport Beach, California? Yeah, right.

College isnt for everyone and isn't a right., and I wish politicians would stop saying it is. If you learn a vocation you can apprentice for a while and probably have your own business by 30 if you are good at it.

There has been a big boom in community colleges offering programs like automotive repair and welding in direct partnership with local businesses. Extremely successful. The great lie that poking around in "college" is somehow better than getting an electrician license for everyone is finally going away.

LOL. We are doing some amazing things. I really don't see us ever getting into the med school game unless there is some synergy with UTSW. That said, we need to focus on getting Dedman Law and Cox into the upper echelon where they belong. SMU undergrad is improving so rapidly it is really hard to keep up. I believe we crack the USNWR Top 50 in the next 3-5 years.

LOL. We are doing some amazing things. I really don't see us ever getting into the med school game unless there is some synergy with UTSW. That said, we need to focus on getting Dedman Law and Cox into the upper echelon where they belong. SMU undergrad is improving so rapidly it is really hard to keep up. I believe we crack the USNWR Top 50 in the next 3-5 years.

I wasn't kidding! I like your updates. With the current campaign set to wrap up in December, I'm sure they have a few more big/decent-sized announcements to make. I just hope we re-group and start thinking in terms of the next campaign. With the complete explosion happening in DFW, this is no time to take our foot off the gas.

One area I hope SMU really focuses on in the future is the Legacy campus. There may not be a more focused area of growth anywhere in the US (than west Plano and Frisco). SMU needs to lock down that 5 square miles around the campus. Plano needs to introduce an Auto and Structured Finance program.

Many UNT students end up teachers, nurses, social workers, and police officers. For professions like that, UNT is a great value.
- I would bet serious money that 90% of the teaching majors from UNT and 95% of engineering majors from UTA have decent jobs in their field.
- I would be serious money that 90% of Chicano Studies majors from any university are working as waiters, baristas, etc unless they are in grad school.

The main problem is that easy student loan access has allowed schools to offer frivolous majors like: Chicano Studies, Women's Studies, Films Studies, Parks and Recreation, etc. When kids graduate, they discover that their "nut" is more than a car payment and they have no hope of ever paying the money back.
