Wrong! Just because they are not in the majority doesn't mean their vote/opinion doesn't count. That is what makes America the greatest country in the world, EVERYONE'S vote counts, regardless of the view. Doesn't matter of you agree with it or not.

Yeah everyone's vote counts, but the majority wins. And the majority isn't bothered by it. Ergo, don't change the name, move on.

Has there been a vote? Do you speak for the country?

Should be pointed out that the term Negro and its uglier derivations are direct translations of the word black from Spanish. Masculine o in negro meaning Black Man. Could some one even trademark "Black Man" today. I kind of doubt it especially if it was referencing a race of people

I respect most of your posts but that is such a ridiculous argument.
the term "irish" is not equivalent but the mascot certainly is. Of course this whole issue is wrapped up in the push to eliminate Indian mascots of any kind which IS a direct parallel to "irish". Could a team be the "Fightin' Israelis" and run out with a guy with a Rabbi beard?

Again, you're wrong. It is an attempt to eliminate mascots with an offensive name. But spin it anyway you want.

I wonder if Red Neck is considered an offensive slur under trademark law. If it is it would certainly be persuasive
The only difference is that nobody has used those terms as a team name for 50+ years. I would be sympathetic if it were a new issue, perhaps an Arab mascot and there are only now enough Arabs to be heard. Or if "redskin" was a term under active transition like "colored" in the 60s/70s. This is different. This is not the 70s, heyday of the Indian rights movement with the occupation of alcatraz and new attention being paid to those people. Today, few Indians exist, very few people know one, and even fewer know one who thinks this is an issue, and even fewer know one who is genetically Indian enough to even look "red". Discrimination toward Indians is probably at the lowest point ever. This entirely smacks of a faux-outrage issue with very heavy-handed government interference. That makes everyone angry. Sorry tiny portion of the 1% of Americans who are native Americans who are offended.

Convince the organization to change. Vote with your dollars. Write a thousand op ed pieces. But for the love of all that is holy, liberals have got to stop using the bully stick of government to force others to comply with their view of the world. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

You want everyone to comply with your view of the world.....because your view has to be right. If ANYONE doesn't see it your way, they are damned. America was founded for the free and the brave, but your way has to be right, everyone else be damned.

Well Stallion, please let me know of the predominantly Asian high schools that choose the nickname "China men" for themselves, or the predominantly Black high schools that call themselves the "Brownies." As was pointed out earlier in this thread, predominantly Native American high schools in America today use the nickname "Redskins," and the former president of the NCAI actually suggested the team move away from its script "R" logo in the 70s and change to the logo they use today. So that's probably the difference. I think couch 'em is right.

Disagree with you on this. No one is mandating that others agree with the team on this issue. It's perfectly within the rights of the aggrieved parties to protest outside of stadiums (as they've done in the past), organize boycotts of Redskins' sponsors, etc. The market can and likely ultimately will determine if/when the name changes. But liberals are like the little wimps on the playground who run and tattle to the teacher (the federal government) whenever they can't get their way.

I'd like to know of one predominantly Native American HS that choose the nickname "Redskins?"

Actually liberals (or anyone else) choose to use the government as the 'bully pulpit and stick' on an issue at any time, for any cause, for one reason....because it works. Again, stray from the common thought, or the accepted practice, and pay the price. Now that price isn't just reflected in the free market, but also in the courtroom of our country. The Washington Redskins are a private organization. They can't be 'forced' into a name change, but can be economically pressured (as mentioned above), or by pressure within the league to fold on this issue. Our Court's decision is a part of that economic pressure, as the ruling allows others outside the organization to now profit by what was once protected TMs. The real danger here is that our government has decided to involve itself in this kind of matter (the same government BTW that has happily inflicted the BIA on Native Americans). It is nothing more than a moveable feast on the current hot button issue to garner attention...while Rome burns. end of rant, but we as Americans deserve better.
