I grew up in the Methodist church and we would go to several UMYF events for SMU sporting events so my affiliation with SMU started pretty early in my life. I think I was 9 years old when I saw my first SMU football game (Texas A&M vs. SMU in the Cotton Bowl). At the time I want to say the Aggies were ranked in the top 5.

I will say that if you were not Methodist (which VERY few people in my town were....almost all Baptist or Church of Christ) then you probably didn't know much of anything about SMU other than it was in Dallas. When I got into high school I knew by my sophomore year that I wanted to attend SMU so I started researching the school and seeing what my options were. I applied to SMU, UT-Austin, Trinity, and Tulane. I was accepted to all of them but when the dust settled I think I always knew I would end up at SMU. Lone Oak is only 2 hours east of Dallas and I was in love with SMU from the moment I saw the campus.

I knew of only one other kid from Lone Oak that ended up at SMU. He was probably upper middle class but by no means rich. He was a year younger than I was and has a good career now here in Dallas. We chat from time to time. I will say I knew of very few kids from rural backgrounds at SMU but that was part of the draw for me. I'd had enough of that growing up.
Back off Warchild seriously.

I grew up in a Dallas suburb. While there were a few people from my HS (about 6) and town (about 12) in my freshman class, most of my friends went to TAMU.

Our college pecking order:
1) Ivy League/Stanford/etc
2) Rice/Duke
3) TAMU/UT/SMU/OOS Private Schools
4) Baylor (for the Baptists)
5) Tech/TCU/OOS State Schools (AR/OU/etc)
6) UNT/SFA/SWTA/etc.
Do unto others before they do unto you!!
