Help me out here, guys.

I'll be visiting SMU this weekend (as part of my college search). We're staying at the Embassy Suites on Northwest Highway near Lemmon Road and Bachman Lake.

What restaurants are good in that area? What is there to do around there?

Yes, it is.

I'd say head a little bit east on NW Hwy. Preston Center (Preston & NW Hwy) has a bunch of good places.

Great, so this hotel is not in the best part of town?

Last summer when I went up to SMU, we stayed in Grapevine at the new Gaylord resort, but that's too much of a drive (Grapevine-SMU) to make in Dallas traffic in the morning in an SUV with gas prices so high.

94 - What does Kuby's serve?

Ikus - Thanks, I'll check out the Preston Center.

There are also a couple of nice little places at Midway Road and NW Highway which is also east, but closer than Preston Road. Or go southeast a little ways to Lovers Lane and between Midway Road and east to Douglas Avenue has a good selection, such as Celebration, Dunstons, Rafa's (Tex-Mex), City Cafe, Kathleen's Art Cafe...and many more.

I think the hotel is very nice, but located in a strange place. You will want to spend your off times to the east of there. There is a movie theater one block east of Inwood and Lovers Lane which usually has pretty good movies.

BTW, Kuby's serves German food.

Thanks, PK! Are any of these places kid-friendly? I'll have my brother and sister (who are both 10) on the trip. They are well-behaved, but still...they are 10.

Drive up NW HWY to Preston Center and eat at Flying Fish. It's a fun place to eat on a Friday or Saturday night and it has a good selection of seafood. You can't go wrong here.

Celebration would be good as would Dunston's for families with kids. Celebration has home style food and Dunston's is a moderately priced steak house (they have hamburgers on the kid's menu). If you go to Dunston's, ask for the back dining room or park in back and go in the back door. I've never been to Flying Fish, so I don't know if that place is kid friendly or not.

BTW, Celebration is about two blocks east of Midway Road and Dunston's is a block east of Inwood road across from the Inwood theater. Both are on the North side of Lovers Lane.

Calallen,

Near where you are staying is the BEST BBQ in Dallas.

At NW Highway and Inwood head south on Inwood for about 5 minutes.

Called Sonny Bryan's BBQ...

Located at 2202 Inwood Road....heading south it's on the left-hand side.

Eat there and the kids will think they are in school (but in a GOOD WAY).

Order the Chopped Beef Sandwich.

You will not be disappointed.
