Took a detour thru the campus yesterday...students are returning from summer break...sorority girls and fraternity guys are moving back into their houses...student orientation taking place...lots of moms & dads getting their kids acclimated to Dallas...we ate lunch at Kuby's and several new students and their parents were in there, too...it's a shame that SMU and the Park Cities does not have some kind of 'Welcome Back' campaign like other universities do...Hillcrest Ave., Mockingbird Lane, Snider Plaza, etc. should have banners and welcome signs out for SMU students, too, instead of all the Highland Park stuff...it was nice to see SMU students wearing shirts and caps with the letters on them...I just hope they continue their school pride by attending the football, basketball and soccer games this year! GO MUSTANGS!

There are great places 45 minutes away. I just want someplace I can go for lunch.

Best town for German food with proximity to Austin is New Braunfels. Oma's Haus, Bavarian Village, New Braunfels Smokehouse all had some good German food last time I went into each. NOTE: NB Smokehouse is slightly less German than the others, but it still has a decidedly German atmosphere.

Ball's Hamburgers has SMU paraphernelia all over the place. Maybe you should have eaten there.

Talk about a thread hi-jacking.... well hey folks school's back in session Thursday... I wonder how many students will share the team's enthusiasm. Probably not. Maybe some unsuspecting freshman will be infected with the disease we all share. Pony fandom.
I'm all for unbridled optimism. It beats the alternative.
Go Ponies! Go to Kuby's!

DG: I wasn't slamming Kuby's. And I've eaten at Ball's. Yeah, they have great SMU stuff all over the place. Wish other establishments around SMU would do the same!
But go to almost any other college area neighborhood/town in the country and you'll see signs welcoming students back and the 'welcome mat' rolled out...but in the Park Cities and surrounding areas it's just not done. There should be banners up and down Hillcrest Ave. and Mockingbird Lane on the lightpoles (this was done when Ford Stadium opened in 2000) and signs in all of the stores/restaurants letting new & returning SMU students know that their $$$ and patronage is appreciated.
