SMU to require Sophmores to live on campus

According to this article, those in 9th grade today will be required to live on campus until their junior year.

I haven't been in the residence halls in years, but the last I saw, the entire freshman quad and upper class halls had been remodeled & updated. I recall the student trustee (Tamara Marinkovich) at the time showing us the master plan including cost allocation associated with the renovation of the entire physical plant, including the boilers next to Hughes-Trigg.

Most of those renovations should not be more than 10 years old.

I think it is an excellent proposal, but frankly, I don't see how it will fly.
The residence halls never had room when we were there. With freshman all on campus (which is a fantastic idea, just like mandated spring rush) and with the other three classes populating the rest of the halls, I just can't see where they put the rest of the students.

They caught all kinds of hell when they took halls off-line to renovate them. Are they experiencing a problem w/ vacancy now, or is it a way to gain control over students who as sophomores are by and large all underage?

Either bite the bullet and mandate everybody on campus (either in halls or greek houses) and then build the requisite facilities (and parking) to make that happen, or stop discussing what from the get-go seems like a thorough waste of time, money, and energy.

I heard Boaz Hall will be closed for the entire 2007-08 school year, presumably for renovations. Perhaps that's all part of this grand scheme?

Eh, the majority of students will probably just find a way around it by living in their respective Greek house. So, the natural progression will probably be:

Frosh: Dorm
Soph: Frat/Sorority House
Junior: Apartment or Frat/Sorority House
Senior: Apartment

I wish they had done that when I was there.... I mean not being in a frat.... it kind of sucked, because my freshman year was one of the bet years of my life. I never had to worry about what I was dong that night.

In retrospect I should have thought a little hard about the whole greek thing. But, even though I really didn't want to go greek, to my credit I still went through rush, to see what it was all about.

It seems like the RLSH way of thought is: "Hmm, people are leaving so how do we keep them around? Oh, by requiring people to stay against their will."

I moved into an apt my soph year because I wanted my own place where I didn't have an RA breathing down my neck every time I wanted to crack a beer. Also, dorm housing was a lot more expensive than Signature Gunpointe.

If RLSH wants more students to live on campus, they should look at the reasons they don't now. I think the answer is more apartments. I moved to SMU Apts. my junior and senior years at it was awesome -- on campus but still living 'on my own' without the oversight of an RA. I presume they'll have to build something to replace them when a certian library is built. Maybe they can get some nice modern ones like I've seen at other schools with more capacity.

Maybe it is obvious to only me, but when they renovate the dorms, they are reducing the number of units, not increasing them. Therefore, if they are going to require more people to live on campus, they are going to have to build new dorms. The question is where?

At the staff recognition ceremony last week, it was mentioned that 4 new student housing facilities are in the plans. How soon they'll break ground for these, and where in the world are they going to be, wasn't addressed.

Sure, every school has FRESHMAN dorms.
If you make somewhat cool apartments like most schools, maybe that might work.

If you are going to create more spots for rooms on campus, do what the morning news said tcu was doing--more garages and residence quarters inside (not on the fringe or outside like all the a&m buildings)---keeps the campus feeling like a true campus. If you are going to require it, make sure you do every thing to provide the opportunity for as close-knit a student body as possible with a place to park. The closer the students, the better chance of more groups and teams supporting each other in and out of school.

Hmm. The only place I can think of is Letterman/SAE/Lamb Chop houses.

Otherwise, somebody is going to have to dig out a world-class shoehorn.
