SMU/Southern Methodist University

So, I've gathered but have not been directly told otherwise, but is calling SMU "Southern Methodist University" a no-no these days? I recall Thadfilms saying something about the Methodist affiliation was no longer there. Can someone clarify this for me?

If true, why would you shirk the name? Regardless of the lack of affiliation, it is the school's name. It just seems odd. But I am an outsider.

A "no-no" to who/whom? Why would anyone object, it's the proper name of our school.

It's similar to Kentucky Fried Chicken using the letters KFC in all of it's advertisements. You won't find anything officially stating that SMU is distancing from it's roots but as you have noticed, the name isn't spelled out much............

With all the super-religious extremism that is in vogue these days, the school probably doesn't want to seem like a Jerry Falwell-esque institution.

"Southern Methodist University was founded by the United Methodist Church and continues to enjoy a close relationship with the Church, a relationship underscored in the bylaws of the university. From time to time, the SMU Board of Trustees seeks advice and approval for university actions from the church."

I think we had to have permission from the Methodist church to pursue the Bush library. Yep, found the article.

"Regional leaders of the United Methodist Church gave Southern Methodist University permission Wednesday to lease part of campus for the Bush library, in a move that helps SMU secure its chances of officially landing the library complex."

Well it's interesting to discuss if nothing more. The number one question I seem to get from people in passing conversation when I tell them I go to Southern Methodist University is "Is it a very religious school?" accompanied by the occasional confused look. And of course it's not, not like there's anything wrong with it, but you can't slam an organization for wanting to appeal to more people if that's what they're trying to do.

my '36 rotunda refers to SMU as SMU more than it did Southern Methodist University - even back then. Really don't think about it much.

Response: "nahhh...you're thinking about Baylor."

oh, and to HornFan68: unless you did away with Perkins, the Methodist affiliation will always be around to some extent. About 95% of all the UM pastors I've had went to SMU for seminary. I could be wrong, but I think three of the higher echelon seminaries are Perkins, Candler at Emory U and Duke's Divinity School.
