Dear students,

It is with deep sadness that I report the death of Jim Caswell, a member of the SMU family for nearly five decades. He served SMU with distinction, most recently as vice president for student affairs. Jim began his affiliation with SMU as one of you -- a student -- and then devoted his life to the well-being and development of those who would follow him. We will miss his presence among our University family, but his impact on our campus and generations of students will endure. I know you join me in sending our heartfelt prayers and thoughts to his family.

There will be a viewing from 5:00 p.m. at Restland Memorial Park (13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243) on Wednesday evening, October 24. A memorial service celebrating Jim’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, at Highland Park United Methodist Church with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jim Caswell Endowment for Leadership Development and Training or to the American Cancer Society.

Sincerely,

Gerald Turner
President

Sad news. Jim dedicated life to SMU and its students. My sympathies to his immediate and extended families.

A true Mustang.

I posted this is haste, I was en route to a class at 1.

His presence at SMU has been missed since he retired, and his life will be missed further. My wishes go out to his family and friends.
