Vanity Fair Reckoning The Economic Consequences of Mr. Bush The next president will have to deal with yet another crippling legacy of George W. Bush: the economy. A Nobel laureate, Joseph E. Stiglitz, sees a generation-long struggle to recoup. by Joseph E. Stiglitz December 2007 The American economy can take a lot of abuse, but no economy is invincible. When we look back someday at the catastrophe that was the Bush administration, we will think of many things: the tragedy of the Iraq war, the shame of Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib, the erosion of civil liberties. The damage done to the American economy does not make front-page headlines every day, but the repercussions will be felt beyond the lifetime of anyone reading this page. I can hear an irritated counterthrust already. The president has not driven the United States into a recession during his almost seven years in office. Unemployment stands at a respectable 4.6 percent. Well, fine. But the other side of the ledger groans with distress: a tax code that has become hideously biased in favor of the rich; a national debt that will probably have grown 70 percent by the time this president leaves Washington; a swelling cascade of mortgage defaults; a record near-$850 billion trade deficit; oil prices that are higher than they have ever been; and a dollar so weak that for an American to buy a cup of coffee in London or Parisâ€â€or even the Yukonâ€â€becomes a venture in high finance. And it gets worse. After almost seven years of this president, the United States is less prepared than ever to face the future. We have not been educating enough engineers and scientists, people with the skills we will need to compete with China and India. We have not been investing in the kinds of basic research that made us the technological powerhouse of the late 20th century. And although the president now understandsâ€â€or so he saysâ€â€that we must begin to wean ourselves from oil and coal, we have on his watch become more deeply dependent on both. Up to now, the conventional wisdom has been that Herbert Hoover, whose policies aggravated the Great Depression, is the odds-on claimant for the mantle “worst presidentâ€
It'll be in the men's room, pasted to the interior walls of the stall marked out of order - in need of maintenance, to be fixed in the year 2355.

...according to whom? Why was this posted?
Re: I wonder how Dubbya's library will handle this exhibit?
Read the article. Stiglitz, at one time, was the Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers during the Clinton Adminstration. I posted this to educate some of you Dubbya worshiping dolts.
The Larry Craig stall? I don't who would go there...
The Tax Code tilted toward the rich. Look at any other developed country and tell me how our tax code is tilted to the rich any more than France Germany, or UK for example. They don't tax capital. They have only a VAT which is a glorified sales tax. Who do you think pays the bulk of those taxes, you got it, the lower and middle class. Our tax code taxes anyone who dies owning property more than $2 Million at 55%, plus some state inheritance taxes which push the amount closer to 60%. Our Tax Code taxes upper income retirees social security benefits which are dollars contributed AFTER TAX. Our Tax Code has a flat 23% tax on upper income taxpayers if you have a bunch of write-offs. Our Tax Code has a graduated tax payment code and it has refundable credits even if you earn no money (EIC).
Alan Shore: Yes, I know, I'll get letters...
"some people post yet know NOTHING about football..." WHERE'S MY KETCHUP?!?
You're a big dummy, mrydel! ![]() Funny, I always thought that the republicans were the name callers. Though I have found my fellow dems to be sissies so it all evens out. I know you said liberal, not democrat... but I switched it. This two party system blows. I'm right and you're wrong!!!!! It's tiresome. (Must note... I consider myself a liberal and not a democrat... I just have to vote for them, 'cause what's my other option. I'm sure true conservatives feel the same way about the republicans... at least I hope they do.) ------ But I will go on the record, W. is the worst President of my lifetime, and the worst in any kind of recent history. He embarrasses me personally. However..... I think it's cool that SMU is getting (as we all assume) his library. Brings people in. Also, a Presidential Library is also about research... I can't think of a recent presidency that had SO MUCH to research. Probably bring in a nice amount of smart people in residence. And I do mean smart liberal people. Oh, and mrydel, you know I love you... even if I'm a pinko bastage living in leftist Austin TX. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
I have no probelm with liberals. Some of my best friends are liberals.
![]() Oh, and trust me if you were my age I could argue with you about worst Presidents in your llife time. ![]() And from a football viewpoint, if you are successful in getting Billary elected, maybe we can get a home and home with the University of Cuba. ![]()
As a conservative, I happen to agree with some of the portrayals of the W Presidency was not what we bargained for, and for sure the behavior of the Republican (never saw a trough they didn't like) congress. That said, I think history's long look sometimes finds whether a president was good or bad well down the road. Carter was the worst in my lifetime bar none. He's been a better ex-president than a President. Bill Clinton looked great at the time (except for the Monica thing), but history so far has not been as kind to him so far. Ronald Regan was ridiculed for being a simpleton dolt while he was President, yet he may go down as one of the greatest Presidents in history. So, we may find that W while looking like a real failure may have been a great President as time goes by.
By the way there is an excellent op ed in the December 12, Washington Post by Gerson about what is a conservative. His example I found surprising. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/11/AR2007121101835.html?hpid=opinionsbox1
