A Houston oilman has opened his pocketbook in support of his alma mater.

Roy Huffington has gifted $10 million to endow the Department of Earth Sciences at Southern Methodist University, now renamed the Roy M. Huffington Department of Earth Sciences.

He is chair and chief executive officer of Roy M. Huffington Inc., an international petroleum operations firm based in Houston.

Huffington, who received his bachelor's degree in geology, has pledged more than $20 million to the Dallas university in the past two years, and a total of more than $31 million.

His latest gift will also create the Huffington bicentennial endowment fund.

If the Earth Sciences department has 'em, why doesn't the Spanish department? Either the espanolo dept. sucks, or it isnt critical to the success of anybody.

Anybody rich enough to care about the Spanish department anyway.

Huffington stated original intent way back in the early 90s that he wanted to help fund the beginnings of a $1 Billion endowment. That's probably old hat now, but at the time, it was a big deal.

He is the father of Michael Huffington, former candidate for US Senate in California who, at the time, spent more money than had ever (and possibly has ever even today) been spent in a Senate race.

Roy is the former father-in-law to gadfly and wanna-be-expert commentator Arianna Huffington, as she was married to Michael before he lost the Senate race and declared himself into guys (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Roy Huffington was the first individual to lead large-scale, organized petroleum exploration into Indonesia, and he was the Ambassador to Austria under the 1st Bush Administration 1988-1992. During his tenure there, he had a standing rule that short of a diplomatic emergency or security lockdown, he would stop everything and admit to any SMU student abroad who knocked on the embassy gate all the 4-star courtesy that an embassy could give to a citizen travelling abroad. The guys bleeds red and blue, no question.

Brother Huffington (an ATO) supports SMU in many areas including its athletic programs.

Beg to differ: there's nothing 'racist' about my comment. Now...had I said "There is no money in Mexico. That's why every (insert derogatory term/label here) there is coming to the U.S.!" then that would have been a racist statement.
