anyone ever had surgery on their labrum?

if so, how long was the rehab? do you feel like it is better since the surgery? were there any complications, or lingering problems from the surgery?

Never had it, but your post begs the question: something wrong with your shoulder?

I tore my labrum 1 yr ago in a softball game. (I guess because I broke the unwritten rule that says "no one over the age of 27 has any business playing softball.") Anyway, the doc said he wanted to send me to physical therapy for 3 months before he decided if surgery was necessary. I hated pt, but it does feel much better now. It doesn't wake me up at night any more, although I won't be going around throwing baseballs any time soon. I never did have the surgery, maybe I should have.

As long as you can play your guitar, surgery is optional.

thanks guys... unfortunately I have done the PT route twice (2006 and the past few months). the orthopedic surgeon has come to the conclusion that I have to have the surgery. he gave me basically two options: have it now or wait until christmas break. the problem with waiting until christmas is that I'm not supposed to do any physical activity (i.e., golf), and the problem with doing it now is I won't be able to golf (and school starts in 3 weeks). i am getting a second opinion, but surgery seems to be in the future. My best friend at A&M had it done to both of his shoulders once he was finished playing, and he warned me against it based on the recovery time. I guess I am just curious to see how others have responded to this type of injury[/i]

I don't know about this surgery in particular, but shoulder surgeries rarely heal well.

EX-18. You might want to consult with an ortho doc who specializes in shoulders. Many orthos now have a sub-specialty-e.g. knees, shoulders etc. Do you know if they can 'scope' it? That is a much better alternative if available and recovery time is much quicker.

On a more serious note, shoulder surgeries require lengthy rehab and you need to do EXCACTLY EVERYTHING your doctor tells you to do after surgery. No more, no less. Otherwise, you might want to ask him to put in a zipper since he'll be going in and out often.

Talk to Stallion. His shoulder seems to recuperate quickly after patting himself on the back so often.

I had surgery last Nov. to repair my frayed labrum and stretched out capsule. I'm still having soreness issues and lingering range of motion issues. However, I can pretty much do everything I did before like lift weights (albeit not up to pre-surgery levels), play golf, etc.

I think a lot of my problems stem from the fact that the doc had to really tighten things up b/c of the loose capsule. A straight labrum repair might yield different results. Btw, not sure how old you are, but I'm 26. One of the reasons the doc suggested surgery as opposed to living with it.
