We're already taking for OSU and TexasTech, continuing to head south up next is A&M. I say we make a bonfire!

This is really turning into a sad state of affairs. The admin has really done a poor job of PR on this entire mustang issue. Now our administration and AD/coaches are making our university an embarassment instead of our sports teams. Will times ever change?

GO PONIES!!!

You are spot on. Regardless of one's position on the issue of whether Peruna and/or Mustangs should be at the game, as mascots, etc., this episode has been a disastrous effort by the powers that be. It has caused unnecessary division in the ranks, it makes SMU continue to look like a program and university with no direction, and as of right now, I don't see any benefit to the university or the football program.

And now, to make matters worse, this division is covered by our local newspaper, on the front page of its webpage, not lauding the fact that we've won more games this season than in the last two combined, but there is controversy and division over the Pickens' Plan (and as noted, the rider isn't even wearing SMU colors).

If it is such a good idea, why wasn't it presented and agreed to by Oklahoma State? Cowboys can ride horses, if that's what is going to happen here.

I can only think that the powers that be who put this together and agreed to it did so for the almighty dollar. While one shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, as an old saying goes, one can adequately prepare for the reception of the gift horse. The apparent lack of communication and buy-in by significant University constituencies is not excusable.

I only hope and pray that the powers that be conditioned the receipt of these horses upon the receipt of a significant amount of cash from the Pickens family. This gift has caused too much pain, conflict and negative publicity otherwise.

George Orwell's Ministry of Truth is busily at work. There is a "Save Peruna" Facebook group that wants to 86 the little guy.

Here's one of the advantages they list for "real Mustang;"

A well trained Mustang will be a far more manageble, friendly and exciting animal than the shetland, which is a notorious ill-tempered breed and bites people.

For a mascot I prefer the notorious ill-tempered breed that bites people

That Facebook group does NOT want to 86 Peruna - they want to save him. The "advantages" for a real Mustang are from some student who tried to put in a new Mustang back a few years ago (2006?). Read the TOP of the description:
I recieved the following email forwarded to me from a fellow SMU alum. They tried to do this my first senior year, and Phil and I tried to stop it via an article in the Daily Campus that actually picked up a lot of readers.

Please spread awareness about this horrible proposal. Peruna an almost century-old tradition, one of the few that this fickle school has held on to.

Here is the proposal:

Excuse me if I misread, but my take away was replace Peruna with a full size mustang.

If it truly is a "Save Peruna" site I hope the owners can do a better job of making the case.

I do think that it's a poorly designed site. The basic layout of the page is "Look at this terrible idea" and then the idea is spelled out.

I don't think we are getting any money for taking the horses, but I do think it could have been handled differently.

To do this presentation properly she should have had real American-Indians riding those donkeys bareback instead OSU pawns. She is just adding insult to injury with those okies.
