DALLAS (SMU) - SMU's two new mustangs, given to the University earlier this fall by the National Wild Horse Foundation with the support of Madeleine and T. Boone Pickens, will participate in their first official University duties at this weekend's SMU football game against Rice. In a decision reached this week by members of the Student Senate, staff representatives and members of the Mustang football team, the new horses will lead the team from the Mustangs statue at the north end of Mustang Plaza, passing through Doak Walker Plaza, and proceeding to Gerald J. Ford Stadium before each of SMU's three remaining home games.

Peruna, the Mustangs' official mascot, will then fulfill his generations-long tradition of leading the team from the locker room and onto the field. He also will continue to run across the field after SMU scores and will always be positioned at the end of the field to which the SMU offense is headed.

While Peruna handles his normal responsibilities, the mustangs will remain at Ford Stadium near the field's southwest corner.

The University wishes to thank Student Senator Matthew Neman, Student Body Vice President Allison Reyes, Student Senator and Peruna Handler Jake Torres, football Captain Chase Kennemer and teammate Pete Fleps for their leadership and unifying efforts to incorporate gracefully our new horses into the color and pageantry of SMU Mustang football.

Disappointing, if true.

Oh, this is going to be ugly the first time we score going in the Northerly direction. Peruna will go dashing toward the SE corner and see the two horses, and probably veer toward them. Then the fun will start. Be sure to have your cameras ready, you may have an ESPN moment.

Be interesting to see if Peruna even runs...I can see him staying in the NE corner all game.

From the first post on the thread...

Peruna, the Mustangs' official mascot, will then fulfill his generations-long tradition of leading the team from the locker room and onto the field. He also will continue to run across the field after SMU scores and will always be positioned at the end of the field to which the SMU offense is headed.

So if I read this right, the new horses will not be in the bowl of the stadium? They will just lead the team to the entrance of the stadium and then go somewhere else.

I don't like it, but it does show that administration and the student body knew that had a major issue that had to be dealt with.

At the very least, it keeps the integrity of keeping Peruna as the only mascot in the stadium.

Us old guard may not be fired up about the entire result but for me, seeing only Peruna in the stadium is all that matters. And quite frankly, there's more to that than a walk to the stadium.

The SW corner is by the Mustang Statute, right? So would they be up there for the whole game or on the field (which is pretty cramped down there) since you know they're not going to post Peruna in front of the opposing team's cheering section.

Ok here's the real deal...

The geldings will be in the SW corner by the ramp that allows vehicles, etc to get to the field level. The team is going to run behind Peruna, the handlers will have to keep him from going after the geldings (I guess try to get him to go to the SE corner).

The next thing that will happen is that the players will pray in the south endzone around the geldings with the geldings kneeling in prayer with them.

As it stands now (and the MOB boss [and we ain't talking the MOB Band] can change this at any moment), the horses will have their riders on them and just stand in the SW corner of the endzone all game.

Peruna is known to get really ticked off at other horses in his area. He is a stallion and doesn't like interlopers. The Peruna handlers have their collective hands full.

Technically, administration "worked" (I'll use the word strong-armed) its way through the system to get this done. Again, the Student Senate was basically told, "You're vote is crap because the Board of Trustees" already said it was on the books, and so we're doing this our way. Just deal with it.

Again, now that all three will be in the bowl, I say we do a run around the inside of the bowl at the end of the third quarter with all three. It'll be just like the dot race at the Rangers Ballpark. We can pick a horse and if you hold the winning ticket, your ticket gives you a free bottle of Ozarka.

Of course, we can always go back to that Lady Godiva idea I suggested a couple of weeks ago.

Excellent news. Glad to see the students and players involved in the final decision. Of course all the people that are now proven wrong about Peruna being eliminated should come forward and apologize to Steve, June, and President Turner.

I highly doubt anybody outside of the "circle" was involved in the making of this decision.

No...the SW corner is at the bottom of the ramp that leads up to Mockingbird from the field level.
