Athletic facility upgradesWhat do you guys think of all these upgrades?
Re: Athletic facility upgrades
could you elaborate on "all these"? I saw the part about the scoreboard
Re: Athletic facility upgradesUntil we announce the start of a new natatorium, my enthusiasm is tempered. My priorities are:
- New Aquatic Center - Rennovate Moody - Upgrades to Westcott - New Intramural fields - Indoor FB Practice Facility Pony Up
Re: Athletic facility upgradeshow about adding a baseball/softball complex? of course, someone will have to donate a billion because we will have some properties to buy
Re: Athletic facility upgrades
would be easier to just refurbish reverchon. Derail the Frogs!

Re: Athletic facility upgradesGrass looks purdy. No signs of the wildfire of years past.

Re: Athletic facility upgradesI know this might be heresy, considering how long it's been there and the fact it has served so many functions. but is there any room for a new aquatics center so that Perkins can be knocked down and used for something else? I understand it to be undersized by current standards, and it is sitting in a pretty central location by university standards. If there was I would have to imagine the University finding other possible uses for that site.
If this has already come up a hundred times, I apologize.
Re: Athletic facility upgrades
Might be...?
Re: Athletic facility upgradesThe design is being carefully considered as you might expect, especially given dramatic location and the size of the site.
With the A. J. Barr outdoor pool behind it, the new facility would retain the existing front exterior and remove everything else between the front door and the outdoor pool. The result would be a 50 meter x 25 yard pool with moveable bulkheads and a diving well. The objective is to be competitive for recruiting, training and hosting major events for both Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Teams. The obvious challenge is funding which will be more than $16m. Lead donor is needed. Volunteers? Pony Up
Re: Athletic facility upgrades
How can this possibly be considered more important than upgrading Moody, when basketball (even our crappy team as it is now) brings so much more publicity to the school than the swimming/diving program ever will? ![]() Of course, as clueless as the SMU administration is towards athletics at times, nothing would really surprise me at this point.
Re: Athletic facility upgrades
I have this feeling you're about to get unleashed upon. If merit comes into account, MSD certainly deserves a badass facility. Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.

Also they spent tons with the new jumbotron installed back on '07. Sure Moody needs many improvements, concessions, lockerrooms, restrooms, offices, the list goes on and on and on. Basketball and Coach Doh have proved they cannot be competitive and have been given every opportunity (no thanks to admissions) and have done nothing. Time to suck it up with what they have and take care of the programs that have done something in the last 20 years. Would love for a donor to give 20+ mil to renovate Moody but seriously doubt that will happen any time soon with the majority of the large donors already have given so much. The Swimming/Diving folks have been working hard for the past 10+ years to build a new facility and hope they can get that accomplished soon. Also congrats to Mens and Womens Golf for getting phase one of their facility up and going at Dallas Athletic Club. All those involved have been working hard for 6+ years to make this happen.
Re: Athletic facility upgrades
Where to begin? This sophmoric response is so tempting to respond to. I will leave it that SMU should not be defined by FB or BB, but by the character and value of all students and alumni, who take pride in their university, which we can all acknowledge makes us proud, whether or not a specific team wins. I want us to excel in all sports, but especially FB and BB, given the national focus on these two marque sports. Swimming & Diving is one that has enjoyed success and contributed to the reputation of the school. I could say the same about soccer, track & field (before we cancelled the men's program, RIP) and the emergence of women's sports. But to depreciate these non-revenue sports makes the poster sounds like a booster without an understanding of the role of sports in the development of the men and women. First and foremost, college athletics is a positive force in student development and Swimming & Diving is only one example. I want an upgrade Moody and would prefer we do them all. But, to defer or not pursue a new natatorium is a self-fulfilling prophesy that we only be defined by FB and BB and watch non-revenue sports be marginalized. I'll stop here. Pony Up
Re: Athletic facility upgradesWater Pony is right on. If you have a pregame Mustang tailgate on the front lawn next to the natatorium just be sure to stay away from the walls as the building is ready to collapse starting with the roof falling into the indoor pool. It is that bad.
