Dallas Internet Provider Question

Postby RE Tycoon » Sat Jan 15, 2011 5:29 pm

I'm moving to a new place and wanted to get PF's thoughts on the different ISP's out there. My options are as follows:

- AT&T (Phone Company) - They have the slowest service out there and I don't want a home phone line.

- Time Warner (Cable Company) - Fast service for a good price, and usually this would be my first choice, but I'm going to be using DirecTV and I believe that is the only signal that will be coming out of the "cable" outlets. Has anyone else run into this issue before? Were you able to have DirecTV and cable internet without having redundant outlets (one dedicated to cable and one to DirecTV)?

- Clear (Wireless provider) - This one intrigues me but I don't know anyone that has it. They offer "4g" wireless internet service and I think it is very fast, but their website is scant on hard numbers. Clear is offering a package right now that gives you a home and mobile bundle which would be fun to have high speed internet everywhere in their coverage area. The negatives as I see them are the required 2 year contract and the long term financial viability of the company. There are some big names behind the company (Google, Intel and Sprint among others), but Sprint didn't meet a recent funding call and I wonder if they will continue to expand the service across the country (which makes the service worth it in the first place) and whether they will be able to withstand AT&T and Verizon as their faster speeds and newer (superior?) technology come into the marketplace this year.

If anyone has a comment on the cable integration with DirecTV or has thoughts or experience with Clear, it would be much appreciated.

I have AT&T and Directv as well. You do not have to have a phone line to have AT&T. I had Charter and Directv but I had to have the redundant outlets. It was kind of a mess.

AT&T Uverse for internet is really pretty good, and like stated, you don't have to have a land line or even cable with them, if you don't want.

It is on par with Verizon Fios (it is not DSL, like the old days) and if the neighborhood you are moving into is wired for AT&T Uverse that will probably be your best bet...very reliable and cost effective.
Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!
