OK. I am looking for some ideas, and you have about 5 or 6 years to be thinking about it. I will be retiring somewhere around that time line and I am working on msmrydel to agree to relocate to the Dallas area. I use "area" in very broad terms because she will not accept Dallas proper. I want to be within about 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive of Dallas. We both want a little bit of land (5 to 10 acres max) and I would prefer a small pond to stock some fish. She and I both crave the small town, country type of quiet living. I crave the nearness of Dallas in order to be more accessible to the athletic events of my school.

We are not looking for a large home but would rather buy down a little from what we have now, but that is something that we can decide on when we choose an area.

My request for ideas would be for where we should be looking. For instance, I immediately thought of the McKinney area and then saw that it is now one of the fastest growing areas in the country and becoming larger every day. Perhaps something outside of McKinney but McKinney proper would not suffice.

Any advice from our real estate gurus or folks that live in smaller areas outside of Dallas would be appreciated. Again, you have 5 or 6 years to think about it so there is not rush whatsoever. Of course if the right place were available now and I could buy and rent it out for a few years, that would be ok also.

Are you a golfer? I've run across a lot of retired folks who enjoy Hideaway lake..probably 80 miles or so east of Dallas, almost to Lindale/Tyler

Lake Texoma I can teach you how to fish. Oklahoma side has low taxes.
Shoot straight down 75 to Ford.

I do enjoy golfing and fishing. And as much as I appreciate the suggestion Eddie P, it may be too cold for mrsmrydel.

I believe Hideaway also has stocked fishing ponds.

Not sure the wife would go for a community setting but perhaps. The Lindale area sounds encouraging however. Near Tyler, Dallas, and Shreveport. I spent some time traveling the Whitehouse area years ago so that may be a place to look also.

For what its worth, as I started reading this thread, I was also thinking of Hideaway.

Our family had property near there.

Hope you like fried catfish and hushpuppies. And while standing outside, waiting to go in, be prepared for customers leaving to tell you that they just ran out of catfish. It is an East Texas humor thing.

If you don't mind being closer to Ft. Worth, my folks live out in Granbury and really like it. There's a lake, lots of golfing communities, and plenty of land.

I am willing to go any direction form Dallas within an hour or so.

My apologies. Jedi feel neither hear or cold, so I forget that others take that into account when choosing the location of their domicile.

No problem Eddie. I would think mrsmrydel could possibly adjust to the cold if she at least studied the Jedi ways. For me however, even with the Force it would be a long commute for SMU games which kind of defeats my purpose.

Nothing can be too small unless I am the only one paying taxes. My wife is very introverted and enjoys a good book, peace and quiet, and on line shopping with free delivery. Not necessarily in that order. I do not mind that lifestyle at all as long as I can get away to the city now and then, and see my athletic events.
