USC Endowment Raises $1 Billion in 1 Year!

Postby Ponymon » Sat Nov 12, 2011 11:54 pm

I thought Turner was an impressive fund raiser but the new president of USC has him beat since he has already raised $1 billion with an ultimate goal of $5 billion in just his first year as president of the university! When Turner steps down, maybe we should lure this guy away from USC?

With more and more baby boomers retiring now is the time to fund raise. Wonder how much is him and how much is just good timing and the last guy just failing to tap what was right in front of him.

Either way it certainly dwarfs the Second Century Campaign which is doing tremendous things to improve SMU. Can't imagine what $6billion could do for SMU. Stanford is proposing a $2 billion dollar project in NYC with donors lined up [Google, etc]. Glad SMU's campaign is already under way so we do not get left behind. There could be a real separation in the next few years between those able to catch an influx of money from new retirees (and new wave of young philanthropy) and those that fail to do so.

Being a resident out here a lot of that can be contributed to that football team of theirs over the last several decades or so. Have we figured that out - yet??? SC also has almost 30K students, too.

Duuuuuhhhhhhhh

And once this college loan bubble finally burst like the housing did, money is going to be real tight so we better be prepared!

After working several projects with SC over the last several months, one thing that's come to light that's really interesting is that almost 40% of their student enrollment is Asian - which is a market worth tapping.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

If I remember correctly, the USC medical center received a sizeable donation this year in the range of $400M+ or thereabouts - enough to change the name or add another name to the existing one.

Any way SMU can get into the hospital business? LOL!!!

yeah, and i'm not going to go look it up, but i'd be willing to guess that a larger percentage (than smu's) of most of the west coast schools is higher in asian students than ours.

i'd venture to say we have a lot more Central & South Americans who are SMU students/alums.

I wish, being tied to a medical school would have amazing benefits. Maybe if UTSW fills the pinch of state budget cuts they will look to partner with a private school, but that will most likely never happen. Can't believe we ever got rid of them.

USC's last entering freshmen class profile shows:
African American / Black 7%
Latino / Hispanic 13%
Native American / Pacific Islander 2%
Asian / Asian American 25%
Caucasian 42%
International (student visa holders) 11%

Source:
...April 14, 1911. On that date, Southwestern University Medical College became the Medical and Pharmaceutical Departments of Southern Methodist University, following the recommendation of a commission of clergy and laity appointed by the Methodist Episcopal Church South. On May 31, 1913, fourteen medical school graduates received their degrees, making them the first graduating class of SMU. Among them was John William Macune, who went on to have an illustrious career in both the military and medical fields.

Despite the medical school’s success in achieving a Class A status by the standards established by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association, SMU’s Board of Trustees disbanded the medical faculty in the summer of 1915, citing financial concerns and the more stringent admissions requirements as the reasons. "[F]inancial conditions," the board explained, "are such that the great expense of such a department is not considered justifiable for the limited number of students, and the money can be spent to better advantage in the college of liberal arts."

Although the decision to suspend the Medical and Pharmaceutical Departments of Southern Methodist University was deemed temporary—indeed it was to last only a year, the programs never resumed operations. The medical building was sold to the State Dental College, and much of its medical equipment was purchased by Baylor University.

Wow!!! Too bad they're not around today to be fired! No foresight whatsoever! The liberal arts BS is going to be the death of us yet.
