Facility confusion

I'm out here in Connecticut so it is a little difficult to keep up with all the latest. Recently I was reading something about a golf facility we are building in south Dallas, and I realized that I am now so utterly lost on what teams play where and what facilities we are actually building, it's frustrating. If anyone (or everyone) could give me a few answers or at least the latest gossip, I'd appreciate it.

1) Are we now building a golf facility in South Dallas? I thought we just broke ground on a golf facility at the DAC? Are we keeping both? Neither? Giving up on one and starting over?

2) Are we building the tennis facility or not? I just realized that we built a new tennis stadium and that the new residential commons is now right on top of it.

3) And speaking of the residential commons area are they building the new band hall? I know the M Band is not a "Sport" but they are sort of our sixth man and student fan club, so they deserve a new home.

4) Which brings me to the new aquatic/swimming center that we have been lamenting since, well, since time immemorial at this point. I know the emphasis has long been on the revenue sports, but we used to be pretty good at tennis and swimming and we seem to be throwing that away with both hands.

5) And speaking of sports we are tossing away with both hands, I remember some time ago getting a brochure that they were going to redo Westcott field, and I think I even sent money. Is that still on the board, or have we given up on that?

6) We used to have an athletic director, love him or hate him, at least he was visible. I understand we have replaced him with a new one. Has anyone actually seen him, or is this Hart guy just a rumor?

7) I did hear that we are rennovating Moody and adding some activity center thingee. Has that started? The sketches look interesting, but looks like we are again reducing the capacity of Moody (not that it matters since we only seem to draw a fraction of what we used to).

8) And I heard a rumor that they may restart men's track and CC again. Is that on the board or is that just someone whistlin' Peruna? This was supposed to be question 8, but I keep getting an emoticon.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but I think I'll sleep better with some answers on those 8 questions.

2) Parking garage for new Dorms is going up where the fairly recently built tennis facilities were located. New tennis stadium and other tennis facilities will be built where the old Mrs Bairds bakery was located. Construction slated to start this spring.

7) Renovations of Moody well underway.

There is a good article on all the construction going on at SMU in the DMN, but you have to be a subscriber to access it. There may be another way to access it with out a full years subscription, but not sure. Check it out.

New golf course in south Dallas (loop 12 just east of 45) will be SMU's new home if and when it is completed by architects Coore/Crenshaw. AT&T and SMU spearheading the construction on land the city was going to pay to remediate anyway (landfill). Will be a (quasi semi-) private club with an additional First Tee facility/9 hole practice course.

Plans have been in place for a while now -

http://www.smu.edu/SecondCentury/Buildi ... ngBandHall

It just needs a Harold Simmons or a whole bunch of us regular joes to Pony Up to get the funding to the point where they can get started with the construction.

BTW - this link will take you to info on a bunch of other projects related to the current capital campaign.

I'm just not understanding why the band hall will cost so much money. I've been inside the space under the basketball courts where the band hall will go. It's already there. All they'll have to do is knock a hole in the outside wall for the entrance.

The space is already lit and easily accessible. There's really no reason why the band can't practice there as it is.

Are they filling that thing with priced up Wenger brand stuff or something? Does the space have AC in it already?

I think it has AC in there but I don't know what goes into changing HVAC Engineering from an open space to multiple rooms. I assume more ducts or something need to be installed.

Has this area been totally designed? Who designed it?

I'll go to Garland and pick up some amigos and knock holes in the wall big enough for a tuba player to get through.

With our without the tuba? We had a piccolo player go to tuba and she wasn't big at all. That's the broadest transition that can be made from instrument to instrument.

I assume that it won't just be one big room but I have no idea what has been drawn.

ok - ill give this a shot -

1) yes we are contributing toward the golf deal. It will have us rubbing shoulders with lots of corporate big wigs, and our team have a world class course. This team is our best shot at a national championship. We are not in charge of anything, but will pitch in a little and get to use it. DAC will be kept as is we will still need it on occasion, like for next two years. Wont building out the club house thingy

2) tennis - yes. starts later in spring

3) 1.75M is raised. total is 3, but some of that is operating. they either have started or will start in short order

4) swimming - cant get enough money from the swimmers. when we hit about 7.5 million than it will be built. could be awhile.

5) no westcott field re-do. that is our future IPF spot.

6) He's real - he is friggin everywhere.

7) Moody attendence is 2X last year, with not much better outcome - best recruits and transfers coming we have seen in 20 yrs. new moody capaicty is 7,200 - it will ROCK when half full. opens in Jan of 2014 - underway as we speak. second best shot at a top ten team is with this crew. we have no idea what is coming.

8) No new sports for awhile.

The tennis facility is the second new one in a few years. They built one and only after the start of an exhibition tournament did anyone realize it wasn't built with the right number of seats (and other details, I assume), so the university ordered the new one, and now it's going be bigger and better, to accommodate (potentially) conference and NCAA championships.

If I'm a swimming, diving or track coach, I'm pretty hacked off. The first new tennis facility was beautiful, and the other sports deserve major facility upgrades before tennis should get another.
