Very scary. My daughter was in the middle of a final exam when the professor locked the classroom door and let everyone know they were on lockdown due to an "active shooter" on campus. Fortunately, she allowed the students to take their phones out to contact families to let them know they were ok. Very hard to try to finish a final exam after that!!

Southern Methodist University and neighboring Stonewall Jackson Elementary were briefly placed on lockdown Friday morning as Dallas police searched for a suicidal man in the area.

An SMU alert text message and tweet were initially distributed to all staff and students at 9:06 a.m. alerting them of the situation.

The university’s website reported just after 9:15 a.m. that the suspected had been detained and the lockdown lifted. The suspect was in possession of two small pocket knives when arrested.

Dallas police say the incident began around 6:00 a.m. when officers were dispatched to the 6000 block of Melody Lane regarding a man who threatened to kill himself. Officers made entry into the apartment, but the caller was gone.

A suicide note was located inside the apartment that indicated the caller was a danger to himself and possibly others.

Officers determined that the suspect was on foot and alerted SMU and Stonewall Jackson Elementary as a precaution. Both schools were placed on lockdown.

Officers located the caller at approximately 9:10 a.m. in the 5400 block of Mockingbird Lane and placed him into custody without incident.

No - mockingbird and central was as close as he got. Turns out he was unarmed. A note made them justifiably alarmed.

Unfortunately these days, it's better safe than sorry.

SMU was locked down briefly Friday morning in response to a potential threat.

After learning at approximately 8:35 a.m. about a potentially armed man in the vicinity, near Greenville and SMU Boulevard, the SMU campus began emergency actions. As the suspect's location was being tracked via cellphone signal, SMU began locking exterior doors to campus facilities and notifying building managers of the possible threat.

At 9:06 a.m., the campus locked down. Students, faculty and staff were notified by alerts via text, phone, e-mail, social media and website. The lockdown ended at 9:16 a.m. after Dallas Police arrested the man on Mockingbird Lane east of US 75 (Central Expressway). The campus was informed to return to normal activities.

There is no indication that the suspect ever entered the SMU campus, west of Central Expressway. The University acted out of an abundance of caution based on information provided regarding the possible proximity of the suspect to campus.

Classes have ended for the semester but final exams are in progress. SMU is making arrangements for students whose exams were interrupted to have them rescheduled. SMU Counseling services also are available. SMU appreciates the fast action of Dallas Police in apprehending the suspect.

Always better to be safe than sorry. If the nutjob can't get into a building, and people are locked inside, nutjob can't kill anyone other than himself/herself.
