UTD determined to reach Tier One

Interesting read, including these nuggets:
Dallas-Fort Worth is the largest U.S. metropolitan area and the only one among the 10 most economically productive American cities without such a research flagship.
Texas has just three AAU members: the University of Texas at Austin, Rice University and Texas A&M University. California has nine, and the New York metro area has six.
UTD is on track to reach a $100 million benchmark for research funding in the next two years, with a goal of $150 million by 2020.

Yeah I read that this morning as well. How has SMU allowed this to happen? I would assume that with the announcement of the Gerald Ford Research Institute that we too have some sort of goal of research dollars that gives us a shot at AAU?

UTD was founded on research...at SMU in Fondren Library. From Day 1, they have been more research-oriented than SMU is.

Wonder in what ways the schools can work together to create synergies and move up quicker and if we are in fact doing that. A lot of the NE schools do that especially for data analysis etc - which is exactly what the new Ford institutes does for SMU. Doesn't make much sense if we aren't working together as much as possible.

But it thought we were working so hard at finding clean drinking water in Africa while unraveling the mysteries of the God particle?

The commercial sucks. They always do. They should just show sorority bid day for 30 seconds

Amazingly, it's not even close to the worst 30 second spot a University is using at the moment.
The Georgia Tech kid's commencement address is far and away the worst idea for a University commercial I've ever seen. No consideration of the audience that would view it (these spots only run during athletic events) and did nothing but confirm what everyone already knows about Georgia Tech - it's a nerd school.

its the search to do something original, even if it is ineffective.
